Cards net pair of big wins

SOUTH WAYNE  — Brodhead closed the week with a pair of wins in boys basketball. On Jan. 13, the Cardinals edged Rock Valley rival Big Foot 55-50, and then two days later knocked off Black Hawk in a nonconference game 78-66.

Against Big Foot (7-6, 5-3), Brodhead (10-3, 7-0) jumped out to a 10-point lead by halftime. Owen Leifker and Cullen Walker each scored 16 points, while Brady Malkow added 12.

Walker, a freshman, scored 25 in the win over Black Hawk. Leifker added 22, while Josiah Engen added 20. Brodhead led 38-33 at halftime and hit 16 3-pointers in total.

Dayton Burmeister led the Warriors with 18 points, while Nathan Figi added 17, Seth Dunleavy 14 and Dempsey Schliem nine.

Brodhead hosts Jefferson (0-13, 0-8) on Jan. 18 and then McFarland (8-2, 6-2) Jan. 21. The Cardinals hold a 1.5 game lead for the conference title. Black Hawk (5-10, 3-1 Six Rivers East) is at Barneveld (3-10, 3-1) Jan. 18, then hosts Pecatonica (4-7, 1-2) Jan. 21.


Wisconsin Heights 73, New Glarus 72

NEW GLARUS – The Vanguards (6-5, 2-0 Capitol South) rallied from down six points at halftime to pull out a stunning win against the Glarner Knights (7-7, 0-2) on Jan. 13.

Dain Walter had 18 points to lead New Glarus, while Carter Siegenthaler had 17, Jack Parman 11, AC Strok 10 and Max Parman nine. The Knights were just 6 of 13 from the free throw line, but hit 10 3s as a team, including five alone by Siegenthaler.

Devin Brabender led Wisconsin Heights with 24 points. 


Mineral Point 77, Darlington 76

MINERAL POINT – It took two overtimes, but the Pointers walked off the court with a narrow victory over rival Darlington Jan. 13.
