Cap City halts Fury; Redbirds drop 100 in boys hoops

BELOIT — The Fury had a chance to pull back into a tie atop the Badger Conference standings. Instead, Rock County lost to leader Cap City Cougars 3-0 Jan. 9 at Edwards Ice Arena in Beloit.

The Cougars scored the opening goal of the game with less than seven minutes to go in the first period. Neither team scored in the second, but the Cougars dominated the third, putting 17 shots on net and scoring twice.

Olivia Cronin had 34 saves for the Fury, which were outshot 39-20. It was just the second time this season Rock County has been shut out.

Cap City (12-1, 6-0 Badger) now has a four-point lead on Rock County (9-6, 4-2) in the conference standings. Metro Lynx (11-2, 3-1) are third with six points, with Icebergs (3-10-1, 2-3-1) fourth.


Boys Basketball

Darlington 103, Riverdale 29

DARLINGTON — The third-ranked Redbirds put a whooping on the hapless Chieftains Jan. 10.

Darlington went up 60-13 at halftime and outscored visiting Riverdale 43-16 in the second half.

Carter Lancaster scored 22 points to lead the Redbirds, while Ross Stauffacher (18), Cayden Rankin (11), Curtis Stone (11) and Hunter Hardyman (10) all reached double figures. Easton Evenstad added nine points. In all, 12 of the 13 Redbirds that saw the court scored in the contest.

Stone hit three 3-pointers and added 11 rebounds and six assists. Darlington collected 50 rebounds as a team and finished 44 of 72 from the field (61.1%), including a blistering 40 of 57 mark from inside the arc (70.1%).


Argyle 57, Juda 29

JUDA — The Panthers had just one player in double figures in a Jan. 9 Six Rivers East loss to Argyle.

Payton Johnson scored 11 points to lead Juda, while teammate Trent Anderson had nine.

Argyle led 34-18 at halftime and outscored Juda 23-11 in the second half.

In other area scores, Six Rivers East-leading Monticello dominated Albany Jan. 9, winning 83-36. Also on Jan. 9, Black Hawk defeated Pecatonica 65-52.


Girls Basketball

Black Hawk 87, Juda 25

SOUTH WAYNE — Moving the game up an hour early to avoid an ice storm, the Warriors dominated Juda in a Six Rivers East game Jan. 10.

Black Hawk led 46-13 at halftime and outscored the visiting Panthers 41-12 in the second half.

Hannah Butler had 24 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Black Hawk, while sister Bailey Butler was just three points from a triple double — finishing with seven points, 10 steals and 10 assists. Natalie Leuzinger added 17 points, four steals and eight rebounds for the Warriors, which also got double-digit scoring from Kaylee Marty (14) and Maddy Huschitt (10).


Barneveld 52, Pecatonica 29

BARNEVELD — Vikings freshman Chloe Schraepfer had 12 points, but Pecatonica was unable to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit Jan. 10.

The Eagles went up 27-12 at halftime and then outscored the Vikings 25-17 in the second half. Leah Marx led Barneveld with 11 points, while Tessa Green added eight points for Pecatonica.


Darlington 51, Southwestern 37

DARLINGTON — Allison Thompson and Brenna McDonald each scored 12 points for the Redbirds in a SWAL win over Southwestern Jan. 9.

The Wildcats led 22-18 at halftime, but Darlington took complete control of the game in the second half, outscoring Southwestern 33-15.

Alisa Ramaker led the Wildcats with 21 points.


Wisconsin Heights 56, New Glarus 52

NEW GLARUS — Jaylynn Benson scored 18 points and Dylan Noll had 15 for the Glarner Knights, who couldn’t pull out the come-from-behind win Jan. 9.

The Vanguards led 26-21 at halftime, but the Knights never went away in the second half. Benson scored 10 of her points in the second half, while Noll added nine.

Wisconsin Heights was the recipient of 33 free throws attempts, hitting 22 in the contest. New Glarus was just 11 of 21 from the charity stripe. Kelsie Handel led the Vanguards with 15 points.


McFarland 49, Brodhead 48

MCFARLAND — The Cardinals nearly pulled out a big Rock Valley Conference win Jan. 9, instead fell one basket short against the Spartans.

Brodhead led 22-17 at halftime, but McFarland took the late lead in the second half and pulled out the win.

Cardinals freshman Abbie Dix led all scorers with 21 points, while Kiarra Moe and Onnikah Oliver each scored 11. Adrienne Kirch led McFarland with 15 points, with teammates Lindsey Lonigro and Katie Hildebrant adding 13 points each.
