DARLINGTON — The COVID-19 pandemic has led to multiple changes for sporting events around the area expected for this summer.
The Home Talent Baseball League suspended the start of its season, but intends to begin during Independence Day weekend. The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star games were moved back to Aug. 5-6, and the Lafayette County Speedway’s racing season was pushed back from its original start date, but competition will begin this weekend.
Other changes around the area include:
Six Rivers Conference All-Star Games
Event organizer Michael Flanagan announced that the 15th annual Six Rivers All-Star Basketball Classic has been tentatively rescheduled for Friday, July 31. Barneveld High School is scheduled to be the host of this year’s event
Flanagan added that conference officials will be in contact with one another over the next few weeks to determine if holding the event this summer is feasible.
In the 14-year history of the All-Star event, the Six Rivers Conference has donated more than $20,000 to the Children’s Hospital.
WFCA All-Star Games postponed
The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association has announced that it will postpone its annual All-Star Games, which had been scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
In a release statement, the WFCA leadership along with their partner, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, said that they have been informed by both UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater that their campuses are closed for summer camps and events, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With that in mind, the WFCA decided to suspend the 2020 All Star games and activities. The WFCA said they will continue to monitor the situation and will update players/parents/coaches if the restrictions are lifted before a final decision is made whether or not to hold the game this summer.
Monroe senior Alex Witt (TE) was set to play for the Large-South team, while Black Hawk-Warren seniors Avery Baumgartner (OL), Cayden Milz (ILB) and Jaylen Rufenacht (DB) were looking forward to suiting up together on the South squad for the Division 4-7 Small School All Star Game.
Erickson Football Skills Camp cancelled
Due to concerns for the safety of the participants, Cincinnati Bengals’ wide receiver Alex Erickson has decided to cancel his fourth annual Football Skills Camp at Darlington High School.
Erickson, a former Darlington Redbirds and Wisconsin Badger standout, has held the camp the past three summers hosting more than 250 boys and girls going into grades second through eighth along with some of former Badger and current NFL players. He noted he is looking forward to bringing the camp back to Darlington again next summer.
