Brodhead VB sweeps Jefferson, then wins Edgerton invite; NGM, Albany win big CC invites
Monroe draws with Fort in boys soccer; Raiders victorious

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals swept Jefferson Sept. 16 in girls volleyball, 25-21, 25-12, 25-13, then proceeded to win the Edgerton Invitational Sept. 18.

Against Jefferson, the Brodhead received 17 kills, three blocks and an ace from Abbie Dix. Alexis Kammerer added 37 assists and four aces. Addison Yates chipped in with eight kills and two blocks. Kaidynce Bevars tallied four aces and a team-high 11 digs. McKenna Young finished with seven kills and two blocks. Kirsten Fish added three blocks and Onni Oliver scored two aces. 

The Cardinals had 62 digs, 38 kills, eight blocks and 12 aces as a team. They also had nine service errors and 18 hitting errors.

At the Edgerton Invite, Brodhead took first place with Lakeside Lutheran second and Edgerton third. Dix was the tournament MVP, with Kammerer also making the All-Tournament team. 

Brodhead went 5-1 on the day. The Cardinals defeated Janesville Craig 25-19, 26-24; Cuba City 25-20, 25-19; Lourdes 25-8, 25-8; Altoona 25-12, 25-20; Edgerton 25-11; 25-21. The Cardinals lost to Lakeside Lutheran 21-25, 25-20, 13-15.


Reedsburg 3, Monroe 0

REEDSBURG — The Cheesemakers were swept at Reedsburg Sept. 16, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16.

While Monroe had a 90% service rate, the team committed 45 errors to Reedsburg’s 30.

Lydia Butler and Kyla Ziolkowski led Monroe with 12 digs apiece, while Elly Wild had 1.5 blocks. Ziolkowski led the Cheesemakers with six kills, while Wild had five. Olivia Wiegel had 13 assists. 


New Glarus 3, Marshall 0

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights won 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 over the Cardinals Sept. 16.

Lindsey Schadewalt had eight kills, 10 assists and seven digs for New Glarus, while Grace Nommensen added nine kills and 11 assists. Carrah Bainbridge collected nine digs; Veronica Tollakson three aces and Ellie Eichelkraut finished the evening with two blocks. 


Pecatonica 3, Albany 0

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings swept the Comets 25-20, 25-18, 28-26 Sept. 16.

“Games 1 and 2 we played our game and played aggressive,” Pecatonica co-coach Tori Leonard said. Seven 

In the third set, the Vikings found themselves behind by 10, but after a side-out, Lexi Peterson went on a 7-point run at the service line to get her team back into it.

“Girl found a groove and fought point-by-point,” Leonard said.

Peterson finished the night with 11 kills, four blocks and two aces. Teammate Chloe Schraepfer also had a long service run, plus an ace and 15 assists. Siri Thronson tallied four kills and two blocks, while Tessa Green ended the evening with eight kills, an ace and 10 assists. Nivaeh Gross notched an ace and five digs, and Gracie Gordon chipped in with six digs. 

Albany’s Brianna Dahl had 16 kills; Alana Durtschi finished with three blocks and 23 digs; Anna Ellinger tallied four aces and Payton Firth dished out 20 assists.


Monticello 3, Juda 0

MONTICELLO — The Ponies allowed just 38 points in a 25-11, 25-15, 25-12 win Sept. 16 over the Panthers. 

Ellie Gustafson led Monticello with 17 kills, five aces and 11 digs. Katelyn Eyler added six kills and three blocks. Kelsy Grant also had three blocks and dished out 17 assists. Sara Brokopp added four aces and Hannah Clark blocked three shots.

Libby Jordan led Juda with seven kills, while Lavinia Rufer had a pair of blocks. Ciarrah Davis hustled for 31 digs, and Jackie Nusbaum dished out nine assists.


Argyle 3, Barneveld 0

ARGYLE — The Orioles swept the Eagles Sept. 16, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22.

Grace Ganshert had seven aces, seven kills and 16 digs. Maggie Godfrey finished the night with five kills, two blocks and two aces. Tori Lantz finished with six kills and two block. Breann Flannery tallied 22 digs and Megan Johnson chipped in with 22 assists.


Belleville 3, Cambridge 0

BELLEVILLE — The Wildcats defeated the Blue Jays 25-18 in all three sets Sept. 16. 

Callie Smith had 15 kills to lead Belleville, while Ava Foley finished the night with 10 kills. Mikayla Caskey had two blocks, while Kenna Edge tallied two aces and 18 assists. Addison Edge dished out 14 assists.

Monroe 3, Fort Atkinson 3

MONROE — The Cheesemakers scored a 3-3 tie with Fort Atkinson Sept. 16 at TR Holyoke Field.

Fort Atkinson scored its first goal in the 24th minute, and by the 36th minute led 3-1. 

Luis Torres scored twice for Monroe, in the 32nd and 57th minutes. Alessandro Chagoya added the final equalizing goal with just 45 seconds left in the contest to tally the draw.

The Cheesemakers were set to return to action Sept. 20 and 21 with a pair of home games against Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld and Mount Horeb. 


Sugar River 3, 

Platteville-Lancaster 1

BELLEVILLE — The Raiders scored two first half goals to set the tone in a Sept. 16 win over the Hillmen.

Aiden Hatleberg (6:35) and Brycen Teasdale (22:04) scored in the first half for Sugar River, with Platteville-Lancaster making it 2-1 in the 36th minute. 

Just over three minutes into the second half, Sugar River’s Carter Siegenthaler (43:25) made it 3-1.

Cam Kleiboer had 14 saves in the contest for the Raiders. Sugar River out-shot Platteville-Lancaster 32-15.


Cross Country

NGM wins Belleville invite

BELLEVILLE — New Glarus-Monticello won both the boys and girls team titles Sept. 18 at the 12-team Belleville Invitational. The Glarner Knights dominated in the girls race, finishing with a score of 28, with all five scoring runners finishing in the Top 10. Evansville was a distant second with 64 points. On the boys side, NGM narrowly edged out Evansville 46-49.

In the girls’ race, NGM sophomore Lily Maynard was the race champion with a time of 21:00.1. Also scoring for NGM were Dayna Karls (4th, 21:55.1), Annika Ziperski (7th, 22:20.0), Melanie Fink (9th, 22:26.3) and Tenley Faber (10th, 22:27.2). Lucy Melvin (11th, 22:36.5) and Emma Martinson (13th, 22:54.6) also competed for the Knights.

On the boys side, Belleville’s Carter Scholey was the individual champion (17:41.5), with NGM’s Tom Nelson (17:52.8) and Evan Guenther (18:24.1) finishing second and third. Also scoring for NGM were Braylon Hoesly (9th, 18:54.5), Brayden Ryan (12th, 19:07.0) and Ian Schwartzlow (21st, 19:35.5). Linden Lounsbury (23rd, 19:45) and Beckett Malaise (30th, 20:18.0) also competed for the Knights.


Albany girls first, boys third at Smiley Invitational

WAUSAU — The Comets traveled to the 65th annual Bill Smiley Invitational at Wausau East Sept. 18. More than 60 teams competed in three divisions. Albany finished first in the Division 3 girls team standings, while the boys team was third in Division 3.

Comet teammates McKenna Broughton and Avan Ahnen were the first two runners to cross the finish line in the girls race. Broughton led the way at 20:26.8, while Ahnen finished less than four seconds later (20:32.4). Emileigh Dallman was eighth overall (22:12.4), with Payton Wachholz 10th (22:41.4) and Kaiya Zurfluh 14th (23:23.5). Also runner for Albany were Linsey Mueller (14th, 24:49.5), Avary Briggs (36th, 25:51.2) and Abby Hollis (40th, 26:20.0). 

Albany’s score of 21 in Division 3 was well ahead of second place Marathon (36). 

On the boys side, Pacelli (63) won the team title, with Auburndale (69) edging out Albany (71) for second.

Gage Roth was the first Comet to finish the race (7th, 17:50.1), with teammate Jesse Schwartz right behind (8th, 17:56.2). Brian Cid (22nd, 19:15.6), Ethan Koss (27th, 19:27.0) and Brayden Bakken (28th, 19:32.3) also scored for Albany. Drew Sertle (26th, 19:50.7), and Andy Gertsch (47th, 20:50.9) also competed for the Comets.


Pec-Argyle boys 7th at Boscobel

BOSCOBEL — The Vikings finished seventh out of 13 teams at the Greg Bell Memorial Night Meet Sept. 16 at Kronshage Park in Boscobel. Dodgeville-Mineral Point won both the boys and girls races, with host Boscobel second.

Ridge Toay was the first Viking to cross the finish line, taking 15th with a time of 17:24.2. Also scoring for Pecatonica-Argyle were Brady Penniston (32nd, 18:37), Kristian Orloff (34th, 18:46.4), Tyler McKeon (59th, 20:19.8) and Jakob Orloff (60th, 20:23.4). 

In the girls race, Paige Toay was 103th (28:02.1), Claire Mathys 104th (28:14. 6) and Norah McCarthy 113th (29:56.6).
