ALBANY — Brodhead didn’t take any time to shake off the rust from the offseason, as the Cardinals defeated Albany 60-30 in their season opener on Saturday, Nov. 26.

Brodhead scored 28 points in the first half, with 10 each from sophomore Cullen Walker and junior Jaxon Dooley. Gavin Pinnow and Sam Searls added in 3-pointers apiece, and Nathan Engen a bucket for the remaining eight points.

On the other end, Albany scored just 12 points. Ethan Koss made a shot from beyond the arc and, combined with another bucket, led the team with five points. Drew Sertle also drained a 3-pointer.

In the second half, the Cardinals got into foul trouble with 12 team fouls. The Comets were unable to take advantage, though, going 8-for-16 in the half and 8-for-19 overall. Koss, Kaiden Zurfluh and Gage Roth were all 50 percent from the line. Brayden Bakken, on the other hand, went 2-for-2.

Offensively, Brodhead picked up right where it left off in the first half. Pinnow sank another two threes with a bucket for a second-half total of eight. Searls added four by going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe with another shot from the floor. Ryan Searls and Brody Riese, who were scoreless in the first half, made it into the scorebook with four and seven points, respectively.

Walker led Brodhead with 14 points, while Pinnow trailed with 11. Dooley scored all 10 of his points in the first half. Three other players totaled seven: Sam Searls, Riese and Engen. For Albany, Koss totaled 11 points. The next highest were Sertle and Nate Stokstad with five each.
