BRODHEAD — Senior Allie Dahl scored 18 points and junior Chesney Walker added 10 points to lead the Brodhead Cardinals to a 57-40 win over the Cambridge Blue Jays in a girls nonconference basketball opener on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Walker scored on a lay-up to give the Cardinals an early 11-4 lead and Dahl hit a 3-pointer to put the Cardinals up 14-6. Freshman Ella Olson made a basket with 1:28 left in the first half to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 26-17. Senior Gretchen Kammerer scored on a breakaway layup just before the buzzer to give Brodhead a 33-21 lead at halftime.
Senior Danica Demrow made one of two free throws and senior Annelise Bethke scored on a two-on-one breakaway layup to open up a 39-24 lead for the Cardinals with 13:30 to go in the game. Dahl connected on another 3 and senior Taiya Hawkins hit a field goal to cap a 7-0 run to give the Cardinals a 49-37 lead with 5:48 left. Demrow got a layup and Hawkins was good on two free throws to put the Cardinals comfortably in front 55-38 with just over two minutes to play.
Bethke finished with nine points, Hawkins had seven points, and Olson added six points for Brodhead.
The coach of the Cardinals, Brian Kammerer, said it was a solid win for his team in the season opener.
“You never know what to expect in game one. I was really proud of their effort. One thing we talked about was maximum effort. I thought our girls did a really good job, especially on the defensive end,” said Kammerer.
For Allie Dahl a win is a great way to start her senior season.
“It felt really good. For us to come out tonight and have a bunch of energy and bring it out on the court,” said Dahl.
Brodhead (1-0) were scheduled to travel to New Glarus for their second game of the season on Friday, Nov. 21.
Black Hawk 50, Parkview 40
ORFORDVILLE — Junior Maddy Place scored 28 points to help the Warriors overcome a 24-22 halftime deficit and top the Parkview Vikings, 50-40 in nonconference girls basketball on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Senior Mya Milz also scored 12 points in the win. Place and Milz went a combined 12-14 at the free throw line to help seal the win. The Warriors took advantage of 28 turnovers by the Vikings.
Black Hawk (1-0) played another nonconference game at Clinton on Thursday Nov. 20
Albany-Monticello 54, Marshall 38
MARSHALL — Albany-Monticello took a 32-21 halftime lead and never looked back as the Space Stallions rolled past the Marshall Cardinals 54-38 in nonconference girls basketball on Tuesday, Nov. 18. It was the season opener for both teams.
Molly Olson scored 20 points and was 11 of 13 at the free throw line. Heidi Olson scored 13 points including three 3’s for the Space Stallions.
Albany-Monticello (1-0) were to be on the road for another nonconference game at Randolph on Friday, Nov. 21.
