Brodhead falls to McFarland in RVC tournament

EDGERTON — Despite defeating McFarland (31-5, 8-1) in the regular season, Brodhead (31-4, 8-1) fell to the Spartans in the conference tournament championship on Saturday, Oct. 15. 

To get there, Brodhead first defeated Jefferson 25-12, 25-13 and Whitewater—which defeated Brodhead in the regular season—25-20, 25-11.

In the championship, McFarland prevailed 25-23, 25-14.

Over the course of the tournament, Abbie Dix recorded 25 kills, followed by Kirsten Fish with 16 and Addison Yates with 10. Alexis Kammerer totaled eight service aces and 52 of the team’s 55 assists. Six different players hit double digits in digs: Mckenna Young (19), Dix (18), Kaidynce Bevars (17), Kammerer (14), Jaelyn Hilliard (14) and Yates (13). 

Brodhead received a first-round bye in the WIAA tournament and won’t play until Thursday, Oct. 20.


RANDOLPH 2, NEW GLARUS 0

RANDOLPH — Preparing for the WIAA playoffs, New Glarus (15-8, 8-2 Capitol South) faced off against Trailways West champion Randolph (32-6, 7-0) on Saturday, Oct. 15. 

It took more than 25 points to determine the winner of the first set, as Randolph prevailed 33-31. The Rockets completed the sweep with a 25-15 win in set two.

Randolph’s offense was balanced between Rylea Alvin and Carizma Muth with 11 and 15 kills, respectively. Muth also led in digs with 11, followed by Brandi Fuller with 10. Jorey Buwalda distributed the offense with 28 assists. 

New Glarus hosts Boscobel (7-14, 3-9 SWAL) on Tuesday, Oct. 18. 


BLACK HAWK 3, ALBANY 1

ALBANY — After dropping the first set 21-25, the Black Hawk Warriors (7-11, 7-5 Six Rivers East) won the next three sets to defeat the Albany Comets (3-13, 3-8) on Thursday, Oct. 13.

The second set was still competitive, as Black Hawk edged Albany 25-22. The Warriors then cruised to 25-10 and 25-15 victories. 

Black Hawk hosts Benton (12-10, 6-6 Six Rivers West) in the WIAA regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Albany will travel to Williams Bay for its playoff match against Faith Christian (16-7, 14-1 Lake City.) The Eagles won their conference with just one loss. 


PECATONICA 3, JUDA 0

PECATONICA — The Vikings (9-9, 8-4 Six Rivers East) put an end to a five-game losing streak with a three-set victory over the Panthers (2-15, 1-11) on Thursday, Oct. 13. 

Pecatonica will host Shullsburg (7-15, 4-8 Six Rivers West) on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Since the WIAA bracket was released, Shullsburg has won two more games. 

Juda travels to Fall River (20-13, 5-2 Trailways West). The Pirates played two non-conference games since seeds were released, losing them both.


DARLINGTON 3, IOWA-GRANT 0

LIVINGSTON — The Darlington Redbirds (12-7, 8-4 SWAL) finished their conference campaign with a sweep of the Iowa-Grant Panthers (0-17, 0-12). 

The Redbirds won by scores of 25-9, 25-16 and 25-19. The win put Darlington and Southwestern in a tie for third place in the SWAL with an 8-4 record.

Darlington will host Wisconsin Heights (4-13, 4-6 Capitol South) on Tuesday, Oct. 18 in the regional quarterfinal.


NEW GLARUS 3, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 0

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights (15-7, 8-2 Capitol South) concluded their regular season at home with a sweep of the Vanguards (4-13, 4-6). New Glarus won 25-13, 25-15, 25-17.

Grace Nommensen led in three categories, each in double digits: digs (14), 15 (assists) and kills (14). Payton Schneider also recorded double digit digs with 12, while Lindsey Schadewalt assisted in 13 kills. Amber Horn dominated at the net with five solo blocks. At the service line, Veronica Tollakson recorded four aces.

For Wisconsin Heights, Emily Van Ripper had nine kills, followed by Olivia Buol with five. Emerson Schaefer led the team with 19 assists. 

New Glarus, a section host, will play Boscobel (7-14, 3-9 SWAL) on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.


BARNEVELD 3, ARGYLE 0

ARGYLE — Barneveld (12-7, 9-3 Six Rivers East) cruised to a three-set victory over Argyle (1-16, 1-10) on Thursday, Oct. 13. The victory extended the Eagles’ winning streak to four. 

Argyle travels to Hazel Green for its regional quarterfinal match against Southwestern (17-8, 8-4 SWAL). The Wildcats ended their season with a 3-2 victory over SWAL champions Mineral Point.
