Bluebirds, Cheesemakers fall in Badger play

JANESVILLE — The Janesville Bluebirds had a 2-1 lead early in the third period, but the Beaver Dam Golden Beavers scored three goals in a five minute stretch of the third period to beat the Bluebirds, 4-2 in Badger Conference girls hockey on Thursday, Jan. 15.

The Bluebirds scored two goals 38 seconds apart  late in the second period to take a 2-1 lead on the Golden Beavers. But, Beaver Dam tied it with a goal at 10:07 in the third period and went ahead 3-2 with a goal less than a minute later at 11:04. Monroe’s Micki Andrews was called for a two minute minor penalty at 15:50 and the Golden Beavers scored a power play goal right away to make it a 4-2 final.

The Bluebirds got 24 shots on goal as Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Juliana Strommen of Brodhead both saw some playing time.

Janesville (3-10-1, 1-5) hosted Viroqua in a nonconference game on Saturday, Jan. 17. Results were unavailable by press time.


Waunakee 6, Monroe 2

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers played hard, but just couldn’t come up with enough scoring opportunities in a 6-2 loss to the Waunakee Warriors in Badger Conference boys hockey on Thursday, Jan. 15.

Waunakee got a goal in the first period at 1:47 to take a 1-0 lead. They made it 2-0 later in the first period on a power play goal at 16:52.

The Cheesemakers cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second period as senior Brody Goode scored a goal with an assist by junior Beau Janecke at 10:38. Waunakee answered with a goal at 12:31 to go up 3-1.

The Warriors made it 4-1 in the third period with a goal at 6:58. But, the Cheesemakers came back with a goal by senior Hans Brandt that was assisted by senior Brody Kettleson and freshman Lane Schilt and got to within 4-2. Waunakee pulled away the rest of the period as the Cheesemakers were called for delay of game and the Warriors were awarded a penalty shot, which they converted at 10:33 to increase their lead to 5-2. A minute and a half later, Waunakee added a power play goal to make the final 6-2.

Senior goalie Brock Brandli made 32 saves for the Cheesemakers. Monroe only produced 19 shots on goal and were 0-1 on power play opportunities. Monroe (4-11, 2-5) traveled to Beaver Dam for another Badger Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
