Bluebirds, Cheese pick up late-season wins

JANESVILLE — Micki Andrews of Monroe helped the Janesville Bluebirds in more way than one in the Bluebirds 6-1 win over the Badger Lightning in Badger Conference girls hockey on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

About 30 minutes before the game, the person who was supposed to sing the National Anthem could not make it to the game. So, Andrews was asked to sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and did just that before the puck was dropped.

The Lightning scored the first goal of the game at 10:06 in the first period. The Bluebirds countered with a goal by Ava Kligora at 12:28 to tie it at 1-1. Kligora scored another goal at 15:06 in the second period, giving the Bluebirds a 2-1 lead.

The Bluebirds scored four unanswered goals in the third period, including a goal by Andrews at 4:02 in the third period, assisted by Sophia Ferrera and Anna Cole. For Andrews, it was her third goal of the season to go along with three assists. Hailey Rasmussen of Monroe and Juliana Strommen of Brodhead also saw some playing time for Janesville.

The Bluebirds (2-4, 4-10-1) were scheduled to host the Cap City Cougars in Badger Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 22.
