CUBA CITY — A big second quarter led to the No. 6 Redbirds knocking off No. 8 Cuba City 53-33, putting Darlington in the driver’s seat for the SWAL title this season.
Brady Horne and Breylin Goebel each had three touchdowns, and the Darlington offense torched the Cubans defense for 488 yards rushing, including three players reach the century mark. Goebel had 184 yards on the ground, while horn had 116 and Easton Evenstad finished with 110.
Filling in with 80 yards rushing, 22 yards passing and a passing touchdown was senior QB Braden Davis, who passed Alex Erickson, currently a WR with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, for the school’s all-time touchdown passes record.
Goebel had two TD runs in the first quarter, which saw Darlington stake itself to a 16-14 advantage. TD runs by Horne and Goebel in the second quarter made it 32-21 at halftime. In the third quarter, Horne added another score to extend the lead to 40-21. He added another run in the fourth quarter, and Davis broke the school record with a 9-yard pass to Hunter Hardyman with 1:54 to play.
Cuba City’s Beau Kopp was 19 of 35 passing for 347 yards, three TDs and an interception. He also had 55 yards rushing. Carter Olson finished with six catches for 138 yards and two TDs for Cuba City, and Chase Barth had four grabs for 96 yards and a score.
The Redbirds (6-1, 5-0 SWAL) travel to Belleville (6-1, 4-1) in Week 8. The Wildcats have outscored opponents 138-0 in the first quarter this season, and 200-25 by halftime. A balanced offense, Belleville has passed for just shy of 1,400 yards and rushed for more than 1,100.
Belleville QB Trevor Syse challenges teams with both his arm and legs. He has 1,107 passing yards and 16 TDs on 101 attempts this fall. He also has 259 rushing yards on 70 carries, with seven more scores. Dylan Posthuma is the lead running back, with 501 yards on 61 rushes this fall (8.2 ypc). Anthony Nolden’s 20 catches, 517 yards and seven TDs lead all Wildcat receivers.
The Redbirds have outscored opponents 335-94 overall and 213-61 in the first half. Darlington has also run for nearly 2,400 yards in seven games, averaging 340 yards each week on the ground, while adding over 440 passing yards and six TDs.
Evenstad’s 564 yards rushing leads the team, with Goebel (507), Davis (430) and Horne (422) adding a power to the punch. Davis is 21 of 39 passing for 379 yards and five TDs to just one INT.
Black Hawk-Warren 24, Potosi-Cassville 12
SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors celebrated Homecoming by knocking off the state’s fourth-ranked team, which also clinched a guaranteed postseason berth. Head coach Desie Breadon called the victory “huge” and a “statement win.”
“Potosi-Cassville is a really good team with good coaching,” Breadon said. “They are big and physical with good skill kids. We knew it was going to be a traditional smash mouth type of game like we have had with them over the years. It is exactly what Six Rivers football is all about. We have had a great rivalry with Potosi-Cassville over the years, so a Saturday Homecoming game was a great setting.”
The first half was evenly played, with the Warriors turning the ball over twice on fumbles. Potosi-Cassville went into the break with a 6-0 lead. Things changed in the second half.
“Our kids came out ready to play,” Breadon said. “Our defense played great all day and our offense moved the ball well and took care of the ball better in the second half.
The Warriors mounted a 17-play drive to open the third quarter than took more than seven minutes off the clock. In the entire quarter, BHW gained 158 yards and scored three touchdowns, all while holding Potosi-Cassville to just three yards of offense.
Brayden Bohnsack returned to the lineup at QB for BHW and was 3 of 5 passing for 80 yards and a 68-yard TD to Reed McNutt. He also added 50 yards rushing. Lucas Milz had 100 yards rushing with a TD. Landen Mahoney finished with 107 yards rushing and a score.
The Warriors had 339 yards of offense, including 259 on the ground. Potosi-Cassville had 218 yards total.
No. 9 River Ridge (6-1, 5-0) leads the Six Rivers with BHW (5-2, 4-1) and Potosi-Cassville (6-1, 4-1) right behind them. The Warriors host Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg () in Week 8, and travel to River Ridge in Week 9 in a game that could determine the winner of the conference. River Ridge and Potosi-Cassville play each other in Week 8.
BSMS (2-5, 2-3) has struggled at times this summer. The Knights have been outscored by more than 100 points this season. Offensively, BSMS has more than 600 passing yards and 750 rushing yards. Defensively, the Knights have allowed nearly 700 passing yards and almost 1,300 rushing yards. BHW has outscored opponents by more than 140 points and have more than 2,000 yards of offense, including almost 1,900 on the ground.
Milz has 846 rushing yards, with Mahoney sitting at 735. Both runners have 11 TDs this season. BSMS QB Jacob Duerr has 619 passing yards and eight INTs this fall, while Nevada Sandlin leads the team in rushing with 370 yards and six scores.
Platteville 28, New Glarus-Monticello 12
NEW GLARUS — Platteville took a 14-0 lead into halftime and never looked back against the Glarner Knights in Week 7 Oct. 1.
Derek Digman tossed three touchdowns for the Hillmen while rushing for another. He finished the night with 229 yards through the air and another 90 on the ground. NGM QB Max Marty was 18 of 31 passing for 165 yards and a score.
The Hillmen (2-5, 2-3 SWC) outgained the Knights (1-6, 1-4) in yardage 359-263. NGM received touchdowns from Emery Johnson on a 12-yard run and Ethan Friedrich on a 60-yard pass with 3:46 remaining. The failed two-point conversion left NGM behind by two scores. Derek Digman then threw a TD pass 40 seconds later to Devin Digman. Devin had seven grabs for 95 yards and two scores, while Jesse Martin had 11 catches for 116 and a TD for Platteville. Friedrich finished the night with six catches for 92 yards.
Up next for the Glarner Knights is an away game at River Valley (4-3, 3-2), losers of two straight games, including getting blanked by Prairie du Chien (4-3, 3-2), a team NGM defeated back in Week 4.
River Valley has a balanced offensive attack, with 817 yards passing and 828 yards rushing. The Blackhawks defense is also balanced, allowing 882 yards through the air and 822 on the ground. QB Ethan Wickman has thrown for 751 yards and 10 TDs in six games. Landen Alt is the top receiving threat, with 434 yards on 15 catches and five scores.
The Knights have gained nearly 1,200 yards through the air and just shy of 500 on the ground. Marty has 1,117 yards passing with 11 TDs and 14 INTs.
BSMS 43, Pec-Argyle 8
BENTON — The host Knights scored 43 straight points before the Vikings got on the board with 9 minutes left in the game, as Kaden Hartwig busted out a 45-yard touchdown run for Pecatonica-Argyle (1-6, 0-5).
Jacob Duerr completed 3 of 4 passes for 59 yards and two TDs for Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg (2-5, 2-3). Nevada Sandlin (147) and Michael Winter (106) crossed the century mark in rushing, and Nate Lawrence had 82 yards and two scores.
In other area action in Week 7, Mineral Point (3-4, 2-3 SWAL) defeated Parkview-Albany (0-7, 0-5) by a score of 66-0.
