MONTICELLO — The reigning WIAA Division 5 state champion Albany-Monticello faced a feisty conference rival in Black Hawk on Jan. 23, but the top-ranked Space Stallions were able to come away with the victory, 69-58.
The Warriors opened the game on a 9-0 run, sending a sinking feeling into some of the Space Stallion faithful. Abby Hollis gave the home crowd its first chance to cheer, scoring the first points for AM at the 14:34 mark of the first half. By halftime, Black Hawk held a 29-27 advantage.
The first tie of the game came at 29-29 just 30 seconds into the second half on a pair of free throws by Molly Olson. Anna Ellinger’s three-pointer with 15:24 left in regulation gave AM its first lead of the game. Eight minutes later, Emerson Briggs splashed a three of her own to put the Space Stallions up by double digits at 56-44.
Hollis led all players with 21 points, while freshman teammate Heidi Olson had 18. Dalana Trumpy and Molly Olson each scored 12 for AM. Maddy Place led Black Hawk with 16 points, and Maddy Lange and Hailey Wellnitz each added 15 in the loss.
Albany-Monticello 58, Randolph 26
ALBANY — The Space Stallions cruised to a nonconference win Jan. 25. AM jumped out to a 34-11 halftime lead against the Rockets. Molly and Heidi Olson each had 13 points to lead the way, while Anna Ellinger finished with 12 points and Abby Hollis nine.
Turner 64, Monroe 23
MONROE — The Cheesemakers fell behind 38-9 by halftime, and the visiting Trojans picked up an easy Rock Valley victory Jan. 23.
“Our offense was sluggish to begin the game and couldn’t get much going against Turner’s physical defense,” Monroe coach Patrick Kenny said.
A positive highlight for the Cheesemakers was 6-foot senior Anastasia Lattin hitting her first career three-pointer.
Kaylee Kramer, a 6-foot Beloit forward and one of the state’s top three-point shooters, was 4-for-6 from behind the line and led all scorers with 16 points.
Belleville 77, Waterloo 17
BELLEVILLE — The Wildcats throttled the Pirates Jan. 23, jumping out to a 47-9 halftime lead. Toria Devoe led all scorers with 27 points. Kyle Liets had 10 points and eight steals. Maddi DeSmet tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. Addison Edge added 12 points for Belleville.
In other area girls basketball action, Brodhead lost to Cambridge 56-42 in a nonconference game Jan. 25. New Glarus went 1-1 over the weekend, defeating Wis. Heights on Jan. 23 by a score of 53-48. Two days later, the Knights were defeated by Lancaster 50-46. Juda fell to Barneveld 86-27 on Jan. 23.
Devoe top three-point shooter in D4
According to WisSports.net and current WIAA statistics, Belleville sharpshooter Toria Devoe is the state leader in three-point shooting percentage in Division 4. Coming into this week, as of Jan. 26, Devoe had hit 43 of 90 attempts (47.8%) from beyond the arc. In fact, her mark is matched only by Pewaukee’s Amy Terrian in Division 1.
The top two shooters at the end of the season from each division qualify for the WIAA 3-point Challenge at the state tournament in Green Bay.
