Belmont Braves Rout Juda-Albany Panthers 11-0
The Belmont Braves scored seven runs over the final two innings to shutout the Juda-Albany Panthers 11-0 in six innings in a Six Rivers Conference game on April 8. “Jubany” had no answer for Belmont starting pitcher Kalli Hodgson, who pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Ryleigh Brown had two of the Panthers’ five hits. Anna Bartels, Phoenix Homan, and Rianna Sullivan also had base hits for the Panthers. Brown also pitched two innings in relief of Panthers’ starter Emerson Briggs. Juda-Albany fell to 0-1 in the Six Rivers Conference with the loss, and 2-1 overall. Juda-Albany was set to host River Ridge on April 10 and then travel to Potosi-Cassville April 11.
Monticello-New Glarus Posts Shutout Win Over Benton-Shullsburg
Senior Dalana Trumpy homered to lead a 15 hit attack as the Monticello-New Glarus Ponies shut out Benton-Shullsburg in Six Rivers Conference softball, 12-0 in six innings on April 7. Junior Molly Olson had three hits to go along with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Heidi Olson delivered three hits and two RBIs and senior Sadie Wilkins came up with a hit and two RBIs to lead the way for the Ponies. Heidi Olson pitched a 5-hit shutout as the Ponies won their conference opener.
On April 8, the Ponies lost in extra innings to the Highland Cardinals, 7-6 in eight innings in a Six Rivers Conference game. Heidi Olson had a big day for the Ponies as she went 2x4 with a double and four RBIs along with a run scored. Molly Olson had three hits and scored two runs for the Ponies. The Cardinals pushed a run across in the bottom of the 8th inning to get the win. With the loss, Monticello-New Glarus fell to 1-1 in conference play, and 2-1 overall. The Ponies hosted the Belmont Braves in Six Rivers Conference action on April 10.
Waterloo Cruises Past Belleville 16-8 In Capitol South Action
The Waterloo Pirates put a lot of traffic on the base paths, getting 14 walks and nine hits to beat the Belleville Wildcats 16-8 in Capitol South Conference softball on April 8. The Pirates got multiple runs in all but two innings to get the win in the conference opener for both teams. The Wildcats got off to a good start with three runs in the first inning, but trailed the rest of the way as the Pirates put up six runs in the second inning off Belleville starting pitcher Story Fossum. The Wildcats were led by senior second baseman Ava Benash, who went 2x5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore third baseman Bryn Prochaska was 2x3 with two walks and three RBIs. Junior left fielder Nora Christensen drove in two runs with a base hit. Belleville (0-1 In the Capitol South, 0-3 overall) faced Madison La Follette-East at home on April 11.
Potosi-Cassville Holds On To Beat Argyle-Black Hawk 8-6
Potosi-Cassville scored four runs in the fourth inning and four more runs in the fifth inning to defeat Argyle-Black Hawk 8-6 in Six Rivers Conference softball on April 8. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead after two innings, but found themselves down 8-2 in the fifth inning. Argyle-Black Hawk rallied with two runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh, but came up short. Third baseman Kylie Butler went 3x4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Catcher Ava Wiegel was 3x4 and drove in a run. First baseman Sam Kammes had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Designated hitter Hailey Wellnitz collected two hits in three at-bats and scored a run. Starting pitcher Mya McNett went four innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. She walked three and struck out two in a no-decision. Reliever Brynn Harris took the loss, going three innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. Argyle-Black Hawk (4-2 overall, 0-1 in the Six Rivers Conference) was scheduled to host Highland on April 10 and River Ridge on April 11.
River Ridge Drops Pecatonica 12-6
The River Ridge Timberwolves collected 17 hits on their way to a 12-6 win over the Pecatonica Vikings in Six Rivers Conference softball on April 8 at Bloomington. It was the conference opener for both teams. Catcher Brooklyn Johnsrud had three hits in three at-bats and scored three runs to go along with an RBI for Pecatonica. Sophomore shortstop Katie Jorenby racked up three hits in four at-bats with an RBI and a run scored for the Vikings. Pecatonica fell to 0-1 in the Six Rivers Conference and 0-4 overall with the loss. The Vikings were slated to played at Benton-Shullsburg on April 10.
Iowa-Grant Cruises Past Darlington
The Iowa-Grant Panthers built up an 8-0 lead after three innings, then topped it off with an eight-run fourth inning to bury the Darlington Redbirds,16-2 in five innings in SWAL Conference softball on April 8. Senior first baseman Ella Winslow drove in a pair of runs for the Redbirds with a base hit in the fifth inning. Iowa-Grant starting pitcher Quinn Hoeper allowed the Redbirds just four hits. Darlington fell to 0-2 in the SWAL Conference and 0-5 overall. Darlington was scheduled to face Cuba City, last year’s conference champion and Division 4 State runner-up, on April 10 at Cuba City.
