Belleville prevails over NG 3-1; Argyle stays unbeaten

BELLEVILLE — The Belleville Wildcats got wins in sets one, two, and four to defeat rival New Glarus 25-13, 25-19, 15-25, 25-17 Thursday, Sept. 18.

The Wildcats held a slim 14-12 lead in set one, then pulled away with an ace by junior Korynn Potter to make the score 20-13 followed by a pair of kills by junior Anna Alexander to give the Wildcats a 23-13 lead. Alexander then finished off the Knights with a block kill and a soft rainbow kill over the New Glarus defenders to take set one 25-13.

In set two, senior Toria DeVoe got a kill to give Belleville a 10-6 lead, but New Glarus battled back with two kills by freshman Macy Pinnow to pull to within 10-8. Potter got an ace that hit off the top of the next net and rolled over followed by another ace to expend the Wildcats lead to 18-13. Senior Bailey McGuire hammered a kill to put Belleville in front 24-17 and the Wildcats got the next point to win 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead.

New Glarus stayed alive by winning set three as junior Ellie Brenkman, junior Kalia Malaise got kills to give the Glarner Knights an early 4-1 lead. Freshman Alise Alexander of Belleville tied the set at 10-10 with a kill but an ace by Malaise and a kill by Brenkman gave New Glarus an 18-12 advantage. Senior Addison Kammerud scored with a kill to give New Glarus a 24-15 lead before a return error on the Wildcats gave the Knights a 25-15 win in set three to set up set four.

New Glarus started out hot in set four as Brenkman got two kills, Malaise got an ace, and sophomore Vivian Lancaster got an ace to start out New Glarus with a 6-1 lead. But Belleville fought back as senior Bree Ranguette, Anna Alexander, and junior Hayden Caskey got kills to get the Wildcats to within 13-9. Two kills by junior Bryn Prochaska, a kill by Ranguette, and a black kill by Anna Alexander put the Wildcats into the lead at 19-16. Back to back aces by sophomore Jocelyn Raven and a kill by Caskey gave the Wildcats the win in set four 25-17 and the match. 

Belleville coach John Pamperin said it was a well-earned win for his team, which is still learning. 

“We have talent and we can play really well, but we’re also learning what the other team is doing and trying to react to it,” said Pamperin.

Belleville (10-5, 2-2) competed in the Iowa-Grant Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20 before hosting Marshall on Tuesday, Sept. 23. 

New Glarus (5-10, 1-3) participated in the Mount Horeb Invitational on Sept. 20 before getting back into Capitol Conference action at home against Cambridge on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

East Troy 3, Monroe 0

EAST TROY — The East Troy Trojans downed the Monroe Cheesemakers in three sets, 25-21, 25-14, 25- 19 in Rock Valley Conference-Valley Division volleyball on Tuesday, Sept. 16. 

Riley Nicholson led the Cheesemakers with five kills and 10 digs. Avery Kaiser and Holly Carpenter each had three kills for Monroe. Kennedy Voegeli had 20 digs for Monroe while Leighton Kaiser had two aces and Brooke Bunker tallied seven assists. Nicholson, Carpenter, and Kaiser each recorded a block for the Cheesemakers.

Monroe (4-11, 1-1) traveled to Delavan-Darien on Tuesday, Sept. 23, before hosting Jefferson in RVC-Valley action on Thursday Sept. 25.


Mineral Point 3, Darlington 0

MINERAL POINT — The Darlington Redbirds lost in three sets to the Mineral Point Pointers 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 in SWAL volleyball on Sept. 18.

Senior Maddie Gratz led Darlington with five kills. Senior Olivea Winslow pitched in with nine digs. Junior Lilly Ritchie had four blocks and nine assists for the Redbirds (4-8, 0-3).

Darlington competed in the Iowa-Grant Invitational on Sept. 20 before hosting Southwestern on Sept. 23.


Brodhead 3, 

Big Foot 0

WALWORTH — The Brodhead Cardinals went on the road and got a three set sweep (25-23, 25-18, 27-25) of the Big Foot Chiefs in Rock Valley Conference-Rock Division volleyball on Sept. 18.

Seniors Brynn Riesterer and Alecia Dahl each had 10 kills to lead the Cardinals. Senior Gretchen Kammerer tallied 19 assists while senior Karli Krumwiede scored four aces. Dahl also contributed with two blocks and 21 digs.

Brodhead (12-5, 2-1) hosted their own tournament at Brodhead on Saturday before traveling to Turner on Tuesday, Sept. 23.


Argyle 3, Pecatonica 1

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Argyle Orioles remain unbeaten at 14-0 after knocking off the Pecatonica Vikings in four sets, 27-29, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22 on Sept. 18.

Junior Brooke Wellnitz went off for a big night with 28 kills, 16 digs, one block, and one ace. Senior Kylie Butler also put up big numbers with 26 kills and 23 digs. Junior Avari Steiner continued her mastery of the floor with 49 assists and 13 digs. Other contributions for the Orioles included Claire Holmes with six kills and eight digs, Brynn Harris with 23 digs and an ace, Elise Kuebli with 10 digs and an ace, Lexi Wonders with a kill, six digs, and a block, and Brinley Meinert with a block and two digs.

The Orioles are 6-0 in the Six Rivers East and are on the road again on Sept. 25 at Black Hawk.
