Banfield, Jackson combine for shutout

DARLINGTON — Darlington defeated Riverdale 5-0 on Thursday, May 25 in the WIAA Regional Quarterfinal behind the pitching performances of Gage Banfield and Reagan Jackson. The pair gave up three hits each and combined for seven strikeouts in the shutout.

The Redbirds jumped on the Chieftains early with a pair of two-run innings.

Tye Crist led off the first with an infield single and came around to score on a double from Breylin Goebel. Back-to-back singles from Jackson and Banfield extended the lead to 2-0.

After a three-up, three-down top of the second, Maddox Goebel sparked a two-out rally with an RBI double to left. Breylin Goebel then tallied his second hit of the game, an RBI single to left.

The Redbirds added an insurance run on in the fifth on an RBI single from Banfield. He finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Goebel went 3-for-3 with another two RBIs. Tye Crist also recorded a multiple-hit game.
