Argyle tips Comets in OT thriller
New Glarus falls to No. 9 Mineral Point; Dodgeville sneaks past Darlington

ARGYLE — The Orioles hung on and squeezed out a 60-59 overtime win over Albany Feb. 1.

Argyle led 32-24 at halftime, but in the second half the Comets put the pressure on, outscoring Argyle 28-20. 

The extra session came down to free throws, with Argyle going 6-for-8 from the stripe and Albany 0-2. 

Jena Saalsaa scored 18 to lead Argyle (12-4, 6-2 Six Rivers East), with 11 points coming after halftime and a 10-for-13 mark from the line in the game. Kirsten Ostby had 10 points and Alysabeth Lantz had 12 for the Orioles, which hit just three 3-pointers in the game.

Sydney Mortaloni had 15 points to lead Albany — all of which came in the second half. Jada Flannery had nine points and Libby Beck eight for the Comets (13-5, 6-3), which hit seven 3s in the game but were just six of 13 from the free throw line. 

“We played really hard vs. Argyle,” Albany coach Derik Doescher said. “We had opportunities to win the game in regulation and didn’t make open shots or free throws. Credit to Argyle for making the plays down the stretch.

Albany 60, Pecatonica 31

ALBANY — The Comets jumped out to a 36-17 lead at halftime and never looked back in their Feb. 2 win over conference foe Pecatonica.

Four Albany players reached double figures in the game — Brianna Dahl (15), Beck (11), Mortaloni (11) and Kristen O’Bel (10). Flannery added eight.

Dahl scored 11 in the first half to pace all players. Albany hit just two 3s in the game and finished 13 of 22 from the line.

Pecatonica (3-14, 0-9) was led in scoring by Sydney Eaton and Lexi Peterson, who scored nine each. The Vikings were 10 of 24 from the line and went without a bucket from deep.


Barneveld 41, Pecatonica 35

BARNEVELD — Peterson scored 12 and Tessa Green added 11 as the Vikings took Barneveld to the wire Feb. 1.

The Eagles led 22-17 at halftime and Pecatonica played pesky visitors. Kyla Ihm and Jacey Spring each scored 11 to lead Barneveld (4-12, 4-4).


Mineral Point 71, New Glarus 60

NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights hung on but couldn’t catch up in the second half against one of the top teams in the state in a nonconference game Feb. 2.

Mineral Point (14-3), ranked ninth in the Associated Press Poll, led 36-28 at halftime, buried seven 3s and hit 18 of 25 free throws in the game. New Glarus (6-10) could only hit two long balls and finished 12 of 20 from the charity stripe.

The Knights had four players in double figures — Lily Himmelmann (15), Jaylynn Benson (12), Lexi Krause (11) and Dylan Noll (10). Emily Streiff added eight.

McKenna Reichling had 22 for Mineral Point, while teammate Mara Aschliman scored 15 and Nicole Johnson finished with 11.


Dodgeville 57, Darlington 55

DODGEVILLE — The Redbirds fell behind 35-21 in the first half and couldn’t recover in their nonconference game against the Dodgers (7-11) Feb. 2.

Kaylee Meyers had 12 points and Brenna McDonald scored 10 for the Redbirds (12-4), which also got contributions from Kathleen Mathias (9) and Maddie Crist (8).

Dodgeville’s Olivia Argall had 18 points, while AJ Phillips and Jojo Heimerl scored 13 each.


Brodhead 44, Edgerton 28

EDGERTON — The Cardinals held the Tiders to just eight points in the first half of their Rock Valley game Feb. 1.

Kiarra Moe finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, while fellow Cardinals Onnikah Oliver had eight and Madison Kail six.


McFarland 66, Brodhead 43

BRODHEAD — Carissa Purdue scored 14 points and Moe finished with eight, but the Spartans were too much for the Cardinals to handle Feb. 2.

McFarland jumped out to a 30-18 lead at halftime and then closed the door in the second half. Katie Hildebrandt scored 21 points, while Morgan Butler had 15 and Lindsey Lonigro finished with 12.
