Argyle leaves tying run on third; BH out
softball in glove stock

ARGYLE — The Orioles scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but finished one run shy of Southwestern in a WIAA Division 5 regional final May 23.

The 4-run rally with two outs in the final inning was capped on a 2-RBI triple by Natalie Romdenne just four pitches after Jadyn Saalsaa drove in two on a single to center. With the tying run patiently waiting to score just 60 feet away, Tori Lantz grounded out to third on a full count to end the game.

Southwestern had taken advantage of a couple of Argyle errors early in the game and led 3-0 after four innings. In the sixth, the Wildcats scored two more to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

Freshman hurler Grace Ganshert tried to keep her club in it, striking out nine and walking just one and allowing six hits in seven innings of work. Just three of the five runs against her were earned.

Argyle, the Six Rivers East champions, had just four hits in the game — two of which came off the bat of Saalsaa, a senior. The Orioles, which had eight steals on the base paths, also walked six times and left eight runners on base.

Belmont 3, Black Hawk 1

BELMONT — Top-ranked and unbeaten Belmont scored two runs in the third inning and added another in the fourth to end Black Hawk’s season.

The Braves fell behind 1-0 in the second inning after Black Hawk catch Maddy Huschitt walked and later scored on an error.

Offensive opportunities for the Warriors were small. Black Hawk had just two hits and two walks in the game.

On the mound, Hannah Butler had five strikeouts for Black Hawk, taking the loss.
