Argyle and Monticello battle in 21-point fifth set

ARGYLE — Six Rivers East foes Monticello and Argyle went five sets and then some to decide a winner on Sept. 17. The Orioles, who swept the Ponies last season, won 20-25, 25-16, 15-19, 22-25, 21-19.

For Argyle, Kylie Butler and Brooke Wellnitz had all but nine of the team’s 59 kills. Mya McNett fed the two, tallying 31 assists. Five different players had double-digit digs — Wellnitz (26), Butler (21), McNett (14), Lexi Wonders (11) and Brynn Harris (10).

For Monticello, Dalana Trumpy had 19 kills on 50 attempts with just four errors for a .300 hitting percentage. She and Jillian Ryan chipped in three blocks each. Sadie Wilkins and Kennadee Johnson combined for 34 assists. Trumpy (20), Audrianna Schraufnagel (11) and Braelyn Holz (10) had double-digit digs.


PECATONICA 3, ALBANY 0

ALBANY — With 14 aces, the Vikings swept the Comets 25-15, 25-10, 25-14 in a SRE match up on Sept. 17.

Tatum Kurschner, back from injury, led Pecatonica with 7 aces. She also distributed the offense with 26 assists. Loretta Tisch had a team-high 11 kills.

Kierra Cleasby was the highlight of Albany’s offense, recording three kills on six attempts with just one error for a .333 hitting percentage. Defensively, Anna Ellinger and Ellie Modaff had nine and eight digs, respectively.


WHITEWATER 3, MONROE 0

WHITEWATER — The Cheesemakers lost by a total of 11 points in a Rock Valley Conference match against the Whippets on Sept. 17. Hitting percentage and kills were a key factor in the 25-23, 27-25, 25-18 loss. 

Riley Nicholson had five of the team’s 17 kills but hit -0.077. Anastasia Lattin, Avery Kaiser and Mya Wild were the only players with a hitting percentage over 0. Kennedy Voegeli (23), Wild (13) and Olivia Feller (11) led the team in digs.


NEW GLARUS 3, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 1

MAZOMANIE —  One month can really make a difference, and the Glarner Knights proved that in their 25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 25-14 revenge over the Vanguards on Sept. 17. The two teams played in the Monroe tournament at the end of August, where Wisconsin Heights won.

“This was a huge comeback win for us,” New Glarus head coach Kayla Zimmerman said. “After a rough start at the first tournament of the year, where we lost to Heights in close sets, we knew we had to show up ready.”

Kalia Malaise led the team with six aces. She and Audry Brueggemann also put up a team-best six kills. Ellie Brenkman and Kate Parman were big at the net with five blocks each. Jaycee DiMaggio had a team-high 23 digs.


MINERAL POINT 3, DARLINGTON 1

MINERAL POINT — The Pointers, ranked No. 6 in Division 4, had more balls find the floor than the Redbirds in a SWAL 25-15, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20 contest on Sept. 16. Both teams had 22 errors in nearly 120 attempts, but Mineral Point had 11 more kills.

Maddie Gratz led the team with 10 kills. At the net, Catie Hartwig tallied three blocks. Allie Andrews distributed the offense with 19 assists and chipped in 12 digs. Lilly Ritchie had the most digs with 13.


DARLINGTON 3, BOSCOBEL 0

BOSCOBEL — The Redbirds rebounded from a SWAL loss the night before to sweep the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-10, 25-17.

Lilly Ritchie served up four aces. Maddie Gratz recorded another 10 kills, and Allie Andrews tallied 22 assists with a team-best nine digs. 

In other local volleyball, Juda fell to Barneveld 25-13, 25-11, 25-9. The Eagles have been honorable mentions in the Division 5 WisSports.net Coaches Poll for the last two weeks.
