LODI — Despite more yards of total offense (333-182), Monroe fell 7-6 to defending WIAA Division 4 state champions Lodi on Aug. 23.
The Blue Devils struck first on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Kale Schneider to Kyle Kurt midway through the first quarter. The Cheesemakers had the opportunity to knot the score, as Ben Gatdula ran for a touchdown in the second frame, but Seth Schmidt pissed the PAT.
As it has in the recent past, Monroe relied on its run game. Five different backs had carries, resulting in 304 rushing yards — Gatdula 10 carries-64 yards (1 TD), Tony Wolf 11-59, Jacob Flom 15-154, Nathan Fuchs 6-26 and Cameron Newcomer 4-21.
EDGERTON 20, BRODHEAD-JUDA 6
BRODHEAD — Week 1 looked a bit different for the Cardinals in 2024, as the Crimson Tide scored 20 unanswered points for a 20-6 comeback win on Aug. 23. In 2023, Brodhead-Juda defeated Edgerton 46-7.
David Masloske tallied the only score of the game for the Cardinals on a 4-yard run. He finished with six carries for 14 yards. The other prominent ball carriers were Grayson Arn (9 carries-24 yards) and quarterback Gabe Bockhop (9-39).
Brodhead-Juda’s offense operated predominantly in the air, as Bockhop was 14-for-25 passing for 150 yards with one interception. He targeted seven different receivers, with most of his throws going to Masloske (3 receptions-28 yards), Nolan Bump (4-30) and Brody Riese (3-25).
WEYAUWEGA-FREMONT 28, BELLEVILLE 27
BELLEVILLE — The Wildcats had a narrow 27-21 lead over the Warhawks nearing the end of their Week 1 contest on Aug. 23, when Carter Birdyshaw ran back the kickoff for an 86-yard touchdown. With an extra point from Charles Mueller, Weyauwega-Fremont snuck away with a last-second victory.
Rushing and total offense favored Belleville, though, as the Wildcats rushed for 298 of their 348 total yards. Logan Derke was the main ball carrier, with 15 attempts for 149 yards and one touchdown. Ryker Swenson (10-94) and quarterback Brennan Keyes (12-57) also recorded a rushing TD. Keyes also connected with Cooper Nemec (3-17) for a passing touchdown.
TURNER 35, PARKVIEW-ALBANY 12
ORFORDVILLE — Caleb Smith gave the Vikings a 12-6 lead in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run, but the Trojans rallied for 29 unanswered points for a comeback win on Aug. 23.
In the second quarter, Parkview-Albany had tied the game at six with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Crane to MaFthias Treinen.
