ALBANY — Sophomore Heidi Olson rang up 29 points and senior Molly Olson pitched in with 15 points to power Albany-Monticello to a 69-13 blowout win over the Juda Panthers in Six Rivers East girls basketball on Thursday, Feb. 19.

With the win, and Argyle-Pecatonica’s loss to Barneveld, the Space Stallions earned a share of the Six Rivers East Conference championship. Albany-Monticello and Argyle-Pecatonica each went 12-2 in conference play this season. AM finished the regular 22-2 overall.

For the Juda Panthers, (5-18, 1-13) junior Phoenix Homan scored six points, and sophomore Ryleigh Brown had five points.

The Space Stallions got the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 4 regional and have a first round bye. They will face the winner of the regional quarterfinal between No. 7 seed Abundant Life Christian/St. Ambrose and No. 10 seed Marshall scheduled on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The regional semifinal will be on Friday, Feb. 27.

Juda will play in Division 5 and has the No. 15 seed and travels to Shullsburg to take on the No. 2 seeded Miners in a regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 24.


New Glarus 52, Cambridge 50

NEW GLARUS — The New Glarus Glarner Knights are champions of the Capitol South Conference after earning a dramatic 52-50 come-from-behind win over the Cambridge Blue Jays on Thursday, Feb. 19.

The Knights trailed 31-28 at halftime but limited the Blue Jays to 19 points in the second half while tying up the game at 50-50 in the closing seconds. With three seconds remaining in the game, Tara Bettenhausen of Cambridge was fouled and went to the free throw line and missed the front end of a one-and-one. In the scramble for the rebound, freshman Ellie Parman of the Knights was fouled with 1.8 seconds left. Parman made two free throws to give New Glarus a two-point win, 52-50. 

Junior Kate Parman led the Glarner Knights in scoring with 13 points. Junior Kalia Malaise had 11 points and Ellie Parman scored nine points, including the game-winning free throws. 

The win enabled the Glarner Knights to finish 7-1 in the Capitol South, one game ahead of Belleville at 6-2. The Glarner Knights’ only loss in conference play was 47-43 in overtime to Belleville on Jan. 16.

New Glarus (13-11) got the No. 6 seed in the WIAA Division 3 regional and was scheduled to play at home against No. 11 seed Dodgeville (8-16) in a regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The winner plays at No. 3 seed Platteville in the regional semifinal on Friday, Feb. 27.


Monroe 61, Whitewater 45

WHITEWATER — The Monroe Cheesemakers knocked down 10 three-pointers on their way to a 61-45 win over the Whitewater Whippets in Rock Valley Conference, Valley Division girls basketball on Thursday, Feb. 19. 

Monroe closes the regular season with an overall record of 8-16, and 2-12 in the RVC-Valley. This season marks a five-win improvement for the Cheesemakers over last season.

Junior Braylee Friedrich scored 18 points and sophomore Brynlee Scace tallied 14 points to lead Monroe.

The WIAA girls basketball playoffs have begun and the Cheesemakers drew a No. 9 seed and traveled to No. 8 seed Baraboo for a regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 24.


Brodhead 59, Clinton 41

CLINTON — Brodhead downed Clinton 59-41 on Thursday, Feb. 19. 

Alecia Dahl finished the night with 25 points and five assists. Ella Olson had 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Taiya Hawkins added seven points four board and three steals and Chesney Walker chipped in with six rebounds and a steal.

Brodhead shot 47.1% from the field, but only 12.5% from behind the three-point-line. 


Darlington 67, Riverdale 39

DARLINGTON — The Darlington Redbirds celebrated two things on Thursday, Feb. 19; a 67-39 win over the Riverdale Chieftains, and senior Maddie Gratz getting her 1,000th career point.

Gratz scored 22 points including her 1,000th as the Redbirds closed the regular season 17-7 overall and 11-3 in the SWAL, good for third place behind Mineral Point and Cuba City.

Senior Sadie Goebel came up with 14 points, while junior Lily Ritchie and freshman Kayli Buschor each had 10 points for the ’Birds.

Darlington got the No. 5 seed in the WIAA Division 4 regional and has a first round bye on Tuesday, Feb. 24. They will play at No. 4 seed Brodhead (18-6) in a regional semifinal on Friday, Feb. 27.
