NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders were hoping for a deep run through regionals and back into sectionals in the WIAA Division 3 soccer playoffs this season. That won’t happen as the No. 3 seeded Raiders fell to 14-seeded Prairie du Chien Blackhawks 3-2 in overtime in a regional semifinal on Thursday, Oct. 23.
All of the scoring by the Raiders took place in the second half. Drew Brueggemann got the first goal for Raiders with an assist by Tikeh Tazeh. Later in the half, Tazeh found the net with an assist by Arlo Belknap.
That sent the match into overtime. But, the Blackhawks got a goal in the extra period to win it and advance to the regional final on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Raiders had 28 shots on goal. Taydon DeRouin had five saves for the Raiders. Sugar River, the Capitol Conference champions, closed the season 14-4-1.
In another regional semifinal in Division 3, No. 4 seed Platteville-Lancaster edged 13-seed Monroe 1-0. Platteville-Lancaster got the only goal of the match on a penalty kick in the second half. Cristo Fernandez-Sanchez had a penalty kick attempt for the Cheesemakers which was stopped. Trenton Wyss had two of Monroe’s five shots on goal.
The Cheesemakers end their season with a record of 6-13-2.
