12-seed Cheesemakers stun 5-seed Spartans

MCFARLAND — In its best offensive performance of the season, Monroe upset McFarland 7-2 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal May 23. The Cheesemakers tallied 13 hits for seven runs and committed just one error.

Logan Meier led the squad, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Cam Newcomer also tallied three hits, scoring two runs. Keegan Dahmen and Ashton Hale finished 2-for-4 with a double each.

Ethan Rosenstiel pitched all seven innings, attacking the strike zone with 56 of 84 pitches called strikes. He gave up two runs on nine hits, struck out one and didn’t issue a walk.


NEW GLARUS 2, NEKOOSA 1

NEW GLARUS — Landon Stelter’s RBI double in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference maker in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal May 23. It was the second hit of the inning, following a two-out single by Leyton Mihlbauer.

Despite being out-hit 9-6, 5-seed New Glarus struck out just once and drew five base on balls. Conversely, 12-seed Nekoosa struck out seven times and didn’t walk.

Mihlbauer and Nathan Hendrickson were 2-for-2 with one walk each. Starting pitcher Patrick Alt earned the win, giving up one earned run on seven hits. He struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. Mihlbauer pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the save.

With the win, New Glarus advances to a regional semifinal against Capitol South rival 4-seed Waterloo. The Glarner Knights swept the Pirates in the regular season 8-3, 7-6.


DARLINGTON 3, WESTFIELD 0

DARLINGTON — Gage Banfield led  3-seed Darlington to a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal win over 14-seed Westfield, striking out 15 batters without issuing a walk.

The Redbirds scored the only runs they needed in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Reagan Jackson and Banfield. Jackson gave Darlington another insurance run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.

He finished 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBIs. Maddox Goebel also reached base twice, tallying a hit and drawing a walk. 

With the win, Darlington advances to a regional semifinal against SWAL rival 6-seed Mineral Point. The Redbirds and Pointers split during the regular season, back when the Pointers were a ranked team in Division 3. Mineral Point then lost three of its last eight games to fall off the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. 


POTOSI-CASSVILLE 7, MONTICELLO-ALBANY 0

POTOSI — A six-run fifth was enough for the 7-seed Chieftains to put away the 10-seed Ponies in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game May 23. Monticello-Albany struggled at the plate, as Kolton Vogelsburg threw a no-hitter and struck out 11.

Monticello-Albany’s top two hitters, Tyler Constantini and Brayden Bakken, drew two walks each. Bakken suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked three.


BARNEVELD 10, ARGYLE-BLACK HAWK 2

BARNEVELD — The 12-seed Orioles knotted the game at one with an RBI single from Trent Bidlingmaier, but the 5-seed Eagles put up crooked numbers in the second and fourth to pull away for a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal win May 23.

Bidlingmaier was one of three ABH players to tally a hit, including Max Godfrey and Will Helfvogt. The Orioles struck out 16 times.

Godfrey suffered the loss, giving up just two earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked three. Helfvogt pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and struck out three.
