Brodhead-Juda senior Elias Klar enjoys the view from the second tier of the podium after his pole vault of 14 feet flat tied for the silver medal Friday.
LA CROSSE - Brodhead-Juda senior Elias Klar knows all too well there are no slam dunks when it comes to the pole vault.

Klar, a Boscobel sectional champion, cleared 14 feet for second place in the pole vault Friday at the WIAA Division 2 state track and field meet. Pewaukee senior Tyler Lorenz just clipped Klar for a state title by clearing 14-3 at UW-La Crosse's Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

After failing to clear a height at the sectional last year, Klar was thrilled with a silver medal.

"To make it all the way to state as a senior feels good," Klar said.

Klar came into the state meet tied with the top height of 14 feet flat along with Arcadia's Andy Edmunds.

"I wasn't feeling a lot of pressure in winning," Klar admitted. "Anything can happen in the pole vault. I was pretty excited to get second place."

Klar said he was shooting for 14-3, which would have given him an outright school record. He will settle for sharing the school record and earning a silver medal.

"I have always believed it's a relaxed form of competition," Klar said of the pole vault.

A two-hour thunderstorm and lightning delay that hit at 6:15 p.m. didn't sap Monroe junior Brett DeNure's drive. DeNure took seventh place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1 minute, 58.68 seconds, which was about half a second from reaching the podium.

"I wanted to get top six," DeNure said. "I wanted to get out in a 56 or 57. I wanted to give it all I got."

DeNure said the delay didn't affect him too much.

"I didn't run very good," DeNure said.

Albany junior Jake Lincicum finished second in the 800 in the Division 3 portion with a time of 1:58.02.

Black Hawk junior Tyler Whalen finished sixth in the preliminaries of the 400 to qualify for the finals.

Darlington junior Jeff Reichling took fifth in the Division 3 discus with a throw of 144 feet, 8 inches.

The Redbirds' 400 relay team of Trynton Schwartz, Alex Erickson, Tucker Wiegel and Kyler Wiegel took third place in the preliminaries with a time of (:45.30) to advance to the finals.
