BRODHEAD - Junior Danny Lewis made 2 of 4 free throws in the final 11 seconds to help the Brodhead boys basketball team stave off Whitewater 62-60 in a Rock Valley Conference crossover game Thursday.
The Cardinals got off to a 16-9 first-quarter lead and headed into the fourth quarter leading 44-35 before surviving a fourth-quarter rally by the Whippets.
Brodhead was holding on to a 60-59 lead with under 30 seconds remaining when senior David Earlywine came up with a blocked shot with 23 seconds left and the Cardinals got possession of the ball. That forced the Whippets to foul Lewis with 11 seconds remaining on the clock and Lewis made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Cardinals a 61-59 lead.
Whitewater's Paul Pelayo drove the lane and was fouled with 3.8 seconds to play, but made just 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 61-60. Earlywine then fired a half-court inbounds pass to Lewis, who was fouled with 2.3 seconds to play.
Lewis made 1 of 2 at the free throw line to put the Cardinals up 62-60. Whitewater missed on an attempt to tie it at the buzzer.
"The big thing is, we found a way to win. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win," said Brodhead head coach Brian Kammerer. Senior Tate Harnack led all scorers with 18 points. Senior Trent Jordan added 15 for the Cardinals.
