BRODHEAD - Down two points going into the fourth quarter, the Brodhead boys basketball team rallied for a 47-44 win over undefeated Palmyra-Eagle Thursday night.

Senior Danny Lewis and sophomore Griffin Day led the Cardinals with 11 points apiece. Lewis scored 5 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a big free throw after he was fouled bringing down an offensive rebound.

"Lewis deserves a lot of credit tonight," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "Not only did he pull off that huge offensive rebound, but he pulled some huge defensive rebounds for us as well."

Kammerer was glad to see the senior's performance, especially after his first two games.

"It was nice to see," Kammerer said. "Going into the year, I kinda thought he was going to be the guy we needed to go to. Those first games, I know he was disappointed with them."

Also contributing on the offensive side were sophomore Josiah DeLorme (eight points), senior Kyle Wescott (eight points) and freshman Ned Slocum (six points). Wescott also hit a key free throw late in the fourth quarter. As a team, the Cardinals hit 14 of 23 shots from the foul line (a 60 percent success rate).

The Panthers, which were undefeated going into the game and winning by an average of 20 points, were led by Matt Preuss who scored 12 points.

Kammerer said he was proud of his team for being able to come back and beat a talented Palmyra squad.

"It's a huge win for our kids," he said. "We're young, but to be able to pull off a close game like we did ... I'm pretty proud of the kids."

Lodi 61, New Glarus 23

LODI - The New Glarus boys basketball team lost to Lodi Thursday night, 61-23.

After the first quarter, New Glarus only trailed 8-2 but the Blue Devils, ranked fourth in Division 3, pulled away in the second, outscoring the Glarner Knights 26-3.

"Lodi's a pretty good team," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "In the first quarter, we came out and tried to slow it down. We only scored two in the first, but we held them to eight. The second quarter got away from us. We threw the ball away too much, which led to a lot of transition points for them."

Junior Patrick Elzen led New Glarus with eight points.

New Glarus fell to 0-3 with the loss, and Sysko said his team needs to improve its performance on the offensive end of the court.

"We gotta take care of the basketball and make shots that are open," he said.

The Knights will look to pick up their first win at Pecatonica on Saturday.

Darlington 59, Riverdale 37

MUSCODA - The Darlington boys basketball team used a strong second half to pick up a 59-37 win over Riverdale.

Darlington trailed 23-22 at the half but outscored the Chieftains 37-14 in the final two quarters.

Darlington coach Mike Hopkins said the key to the second half turnaround was an increase in intensity.

"We were very sluggish in the first half," he said. "We played with the right level of intensity in the second and executed on offense. We didn't make any changes at halftime, we just picked up the intensity."

Sophomore Cole McDonald led the Redbirds with 15 points, and senior Dylan Nyffenegger had 9 for Darlington.

McDonald, the team's leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first two quarters.

"He only had a couple of looks at the basket in the first half," Hopkins said.

Darlington evened up their record at 2-2 with the win.
