Level 1, 2 Gems win state titles

WEST BEND - Both the Green County Family YMCA Gems youth gymnastics Level 1 and Level 2 groups won state championships at the Wisconsin State Club YMCA Gymnastic Championships on Sunday.

Dawn Lederman, Gems coach and YMCA gymnastics coordinator, said that in addition to the two state titles, the Gems won more than 160 awards.

The Gems Level 1 gymnasts capped an unbeaten season with a state championship. Alexis Gertsch was the individual all-around state champion in Level 1 with 38 points.

The Gems Level 2 team also won a state team title, and the Level 3 Gems finished as the state runner-up.

"They only missed first place by 0.25 of a point," Lederman said of the Level 3 athletes.

Riley Nicholson, 8, of the Gems was the Level 2 all-around state champion (37.55) for her age group, and Molly Olson, 9, was also a Level 2 all-around state champion (37.5) in her age group.

In Level 3, 10-year-old Claire Holland (37.75) and 13-year-old Kyla Ziolkowski (37.3) each captured an all-around state title in their respective age group.

Faith Koester won the all-around state championship in Level 6 for participants 14 and older with a 36.72.
