MONROE - The Monroe boys track team moved two steps closer to a Badger South Conference championship after sweeping a double dual with Milton and Madison Edgewood.

Monroe defeated Milton, 104-42 and Madison Edgewood, 119-27.

"This meet was a big step for our program, getting us two steps closer to a chance for a conference championship," Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "We need to keep training hard and hope to keep everyone healthy."

Monroe won 15 of the 18 events. Caleb Ahrens won both the 110 hurdles (:16.30) and the 300 hurdles (:44.25). Monroe took the top three spots in the 110 hurdles, 1,600, pole vault and 800. Ahrens also teamed up with Skyler Stingley, Cameron Wahl and Cullen Sampson to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:42.1.

Monroe senior Brett DeNure led the long distance runners by winning the 800 (2:13.95) and the 1,600 (4:34.83).

Monroe senior Tad Christen won the long jump (20-feet, 6 inches) and the triple jump (41-0).

Monroe senior Luke Voegeli led the Cheesemakers by winning the shot put (47-10 3/4) as the Cheesemakers swept the top three spots in the event.

Monroe senior Lucas Leu finished first in the discus with a throw of 153-4.

"Our throwers really set the tone for us," Hirsbrunner said. "Milton has a very tough shot and disc crew. That was 14 big points. We were figuring about four points. That's a big swing in our favor."

Monroe sophomore Jeff Hill won the pole vault (11-6) and Michael Barrett finished first in the high jump (5-10). Sampson also cleared 5-10 in the high jump. Fellow sophomore Bryan Tordoff took first in the 400 with a time of (:54.57).

Monroe won every relay. The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Lucas Goetz, Alex Bartlett, Dan Vale and Mason Goff took first with a time of (:47.12). Goff teamed up with Garrett Wyss, Goetz and Christen to win the 800 relay with a time of (1:36.72). In the 3,200 relay, Cody Plenge, Sampson, Dylan Starck and Sampson finished first with a time of 8:59.40.

"The showdown with Milton never happened," Hirsbrunner said. "They were hurting in a few areas and were overmatched in a few more areas. We competed to win again tonight. This team is quickly developing a reputation for taking it to their opponents."
