MONROE - Following up shots on goal was a point of emphasis for Monroe last week.
The Cheesemakers took the message to heart. Senior Andrew Aurit followed up Kelli Isaj's shot off the Dodgeville-Mineral Point goalkeeper and punched in the game-winning goal at 77 minutes, 12 seconds to beat the Dodgers 2-1, Saturday.
"Last week our problem was not following up our shots," Aurit said. "I think we controlled the game. We just couldn't finish our shots. I think we outplayed them. They are a good team."
Monroe (8-4, 2-2 Badger South) dominated the play in the first half against Dodgeville, which was a Division 2 state qualifier last year. Aurit just missed a goal as his shot ricocheted off the near post. Monroe senior Lucas Goetz got the rebound and was there to clean up for the Cheesemakers' first goal at 11:17.
Goetz said once he saw Aurit attacking the goal, he wanted to follow it up in case the ball bounced away or got by the keeper.
"As soon as I kicked it, I knew it was going in," Goetz said. "I just hoped I didn't kick it right at the goalie."
Dodgeville's Ethan Nelson scored a game-tying goal on a pass from Andy Sorenson at 19:52. Despite peppering the goal with shots in the first half, the game was tied at 1-1 going into half time.
"It feels good to get the win," Goetz said. "It will give us a boost for the next conference game. I wish we could have got more (goals) in."
Monroe coach Tony Stamm knows the win over Dodgeville could have playoff implications come later in the season.
"It was really uplifting for the team to get the win instead of the tie," Stamm said. "It mattered to see how we are comparing to the rest of the teams in Division 2."
Stamm said the focus in practice of keeping passes on the ground showed improvement against Dodgeville.
Monroe senior goalkeeper Jordan Steurer had 11 saves for the Cheesemakers.
"He has just been fantastic this year," Stamm said.
Stamm likes the way Steurer has bounced back after giving up a free kick goal in a 3-2 loss to Milton.
"He was able to let that go and not let that affect his game," Stamm said.
Monroe plays at Stoughton, Tuesday and will host Sugar River, Thursday.
