MONROE - Freshman Skylar Lassen started her high school swimming career for Monroe with a bang.

Lassen won the 200-meter individual medley in a season-opening dual meet against Platteville Saturday, Aug. 24. Lassen won the race with a time of 3 minutes, 4.92 seconds. Platteville swam past the Cheesemakers 96-73 at the Green County YMCA. Lassen won the 200 IM with a time of 3 minutes, 4.92 seconds.

"We had many solid performances at our first meet," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "The girls rose to our expectations as a team at this early point in the season. Having only 14 swimmers and over half of them being on the team for two years or less leaves many unanswered questions as to where we will be and what will be our emphasis come sectional time, but I was so proud of what they did in the water for their first meet."

Monroe senior Angie Beaver finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:43.25) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:21.66). Beaver and Lassen teamed with Haley Kaiser and Anna Meritt to take second in the 400 freestyle relay (5:03.33). Mackenzie Hesgard finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:37.90) and Abby Oudinot took second in the 50 freestyle (32.55). The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Kaiser, Monica Sefcik, Hesgard and Meritt finished second (2:35.80) and Meritt added a second place finish in the 400 freestyle (5:51.55).

Beaver teamed with Sefcik, Grace Moehn and Hesgard to take second in the 200 freestyle relay (2:20.49). Moehn finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:15.61). In the junior varsity meet, Monroe defeated Platteville 32-26.
