MONROE - Sophomore Max Lang turned in a solid pitching performance to lead the Monroe High School baseball team to a 5-2 win over Fort Atkinson on Tuesday.
It was Monroe's second win of the season over Fort Atkinson. The first was a 5-0 victory on April 20 in Fort Atkinson.
Lang went six innings and gave up just two unearned runs on three hits Tuesday. He struck out four and walked five.
"He (Lang) came out really strong in the first two innings," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "Tonight was a good night to pitch to contact with the wind blowing in about 25 miles per hour. He did a great job early on of controlling the strike zone and pitching to contact."
The Cheesemakers (6-13, 3-7 Badger South) scored two runs in the fifth to take the lead. Sophomore Nick Bansley walked and senior Jacob Ritschard reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Dagon Rach lined an RBI single to left to cut the Blackhawks' lead to 2-1. Bansley got into a pickle heading for the plate. However, when the Blackhawks botched the rundown, he scored. Ritschard later scored on a wild pitch to give the Cheesemakers a 2-1 lead.
The Cheesemakers had a three-run sixth to pull out the victory. Senior Cole Murray, who went 2-for-3, singled and then stole second. The Blackhawks intentionally walked senior Hogan Edwards. Bansley reached on an error and Murray scored to give the Cheesemakers a 3-2 lead. Ritschard followed with an RBI single. Ritschard then stole second and on a throw down to second, Bansley scored.
