MONROE - Sophomore Luke Kuberski of Argyle scored three goals for a hat trick to lead the Monroe boys hockey co-op team to a 5-1 nonconference win over Sparta Saturday.
Monroe (3-11) scored three first-period goals and five unanswered goals in the game to roll to the win. Freshman Cade Janecke of Orangeville scored the first goal on an assist by Hayden Roth at 7 minutes, 36 seconds in the first period. Janecke and Roth each posted three assists.
Kuberski scored his first goal on passes from Janecke and Roth at 5:33 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead. Kuberski scored his second goal late in the first period on assists from Janecke and Roth to give the Cheesemakers a commanding 3-0 lead.
Monroe put the game away with two goals in the second period. Kuberski scored his third goal on assists by Janecke and Roth at 6:37 in the second period to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead. Colton O'Connor tacked on a goal late in the second period to bump the Cheesemakers up to a 5-0 lead.
The Cheesemakers outshot Sparta 38-31. Monroe sophomore goaltender Heath Bear had 30 saves. The Cheesemakers won despite committing seven penalties.
