Knights jousted

NEW GLARUS - The Glarner Knights girls basketball team certainly can score points and create turnovers in a hurry, the problem has been maintaining offensive and defensive consistency.

"It's been the same thing we've done all year - we've come out and had a big quarter and score 20 and the next one we'll let up 18 and score two," New Glarus head coach Braden Rindy said after a disappointing 43-40 loss to Lodi Tuesday. "Right now we're having mental lapses and we're not playing full games."

The Knights opened the game on fire, knocking down jumpers, layups and tough shots in the post in the first quarter, streaking to a 21-10 lead early in the second quarter. That's when the momentum shifted.

"It went downhill fast. First quarter we played great, then we started playing timid. I don't know if it was because I was yelling at them about not boxing out and stupid fouls, but all of a sudden our offense disappeared," Rindy said. "If we get in foul trouble or start doing anything wrong we fall apart."

Lodi went on a 15-4 run over the final 7 minutes, 26 seconds of the first half to tie the game at 25-25 going into halftime.

In the third, the Blue Devils continued to pester New Glarus, forcing turnovers and streaking to a six-point lead at one point, 38-32.

"First quarter we usually play well, fourth quarter we play well. It's that middle section that I don't know if their saving energy or what, but something's happening," Rindy said.

The resilient Knights crept their way back into the game, pulling the score back to within a point at 41-40. But a missed three pointer and timely free throw shooting by Lodi sealed the game.

"They are very resilient. These girls can be great when they want to be," Rindy said.

Neither team shot well from the line - New Glarus was just 6-for-12, while Lodi shot 9-for-21, including Brenna Redemann's final two with 3.1 seconds to play.

"More free throws, more defensive slides, more box out drills - just more fundamentals. That's what's holding us back; the little things, the fundamentals," Rindy said.

Tanya Gruter led the Knights with 13 points. Alycia Atwell and Michelle Preston each had 10. New Glarus' two freshmen, Anya Schween and Cassie Feller saw extensive playing time off the bench, resulting in numerous steals and solid defense.

"They are tough players who have played a lot of basketball. They don't play like freshman. They play more like upperclassmen," Rindy said.

New Glarus (2-4, 0-1 Capitol South) heads to Lake Mills Friday.
