Kind, Foley first-team all-conference

MONROE - Four Monroe wrestlers were named Badger South All-Conference recently.

Monroe senior Sam Kind at 170 pounds and senior Dempzy Foley (182) each were named first-team all-conference. Kind finished the season with a 39-7 record. He took fourth at the WIAA Division 2 Richland Center sectional and just missed making a second straight trip to state.

Foley closed the season 41-5 and was a state qualifier. Campbellsport junior Matt Koelbl defeated Foley in a preliminary match in the Division 2 state tournament 13-4. Foley set the single season record for pins with 30.

Both Monroe seniors Travis Wolf (152) and Tyson Welsch (heavyweight) were named second-team all-conference. Welsch joined Foley as first-time state qualifiers. Sheboygan Falls junior Scott Klemme pinned Welsch in a preliminary match at state in 4 minutes, 16 seconds. Welsch closed the season with a 36-11 mark in his first full year wrestling on the varsity. Both Welsch and Foley took second at the sectional to qualify for state.

Wolf finished the season with a 28-14 mark. He took fourth place at the Belleville regional and missed qualifying for the sectional. He had a loaded weight class with Brodhead-Juda Jackson Hauri who finished as the regional champion and went on to take second at state. The weight class also included Evansville-Albany senior Nolan Kicmol who took second and finished as the Division 2 state champion.

Stoughton had 12 wrestlers receive some form of all-conference honors. The Vikings, the Division 2 state champion, had six first-team all-conference wrestlers led by senior Tyler Dow, a University of Wisconsin-Madison recruit.
