The Monroe High School senior had never reached that height in a track and field meet. That all changed Monday when Keith cleared a personal best 13 feet, 6 inches to win a championship in the pole vault in the WIAA Division 2 Monroe track and field regional.
"Today with the back wind, I just let my muscle memory take over," Keith said. "I've made 13-6 bungee in practice. I've never been able to transfer that over in a meet. Obviously, it was at home. I felt more comfortable and relaxed. It's a confidence boost. We have a really strong sectional. The 13-6 gives me confidence that I can get to the state meet."
The Monroe boys track team won the regional championship by racking up 109 points to finish just ahead of Jefferson (98). Sugar River placed fifth (73), and Brodhead-Juda was sixth in the nine-team regional. The Cheesemakers ran a victory lap with the regional plaque after the meet.
"Our seniors were excited," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "Mitch put himself out there as one of the favorites in the pole vault. We have a long history of strong pole vaulters. For him to put his name up there with the elite is a big accomplishment. He's in the top four in the state in Division 2."
Keith was just one of many athletes to post personal-record heights and times. Brodhead-Juda sophomore Justice Tway won a regional title in the 400 with a PR of 55.55 seconds. Sophomore teammate Brekan Day won a regional championship in the high jump after clearing 6-2.
Tway was seeded fifth in the 400 entering the regional.
"It felt great," Tway said. "I didn't think I had it in me. I felt like I was going to get second or third. I pulled it out and did my job."
Day was elated to set a new high bar in the high jump.
"I knew I was in the top four or five," Day said of the high jump. "I never imagined I would have jumped 6-2, won it outright and get a PR. It was a great day to jump."
Monroe sophomore Brayden Zettle won the triple jump (40-6). Zettle turned his ankle in a meet earlier this season but is getting back close to 100 percent. He eclipsed 40 feet on his first jump and then rested up for the McFarland sectional.
"It felt good to take the pressure off," said Zettle, who will be making his second sectional trip in the triple jump. "I didn't have to take another jump in the finals. I want to go over 41 feet and compete for a state spot."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200-meter relay team of sophomore Dylan Scace, sophomore Drake Ingold, sophomore Jonah Tostrud and senior Thang Lu won the race in 8 minutes, 28.65 seconds, just ahead of Brodhead-Juda (8:31.21).
"We made it out of sectionals and probably made it into the fast heat," Scace said. "We didn't have to run as fast as we could. Nobody ran as hard as they could."
Scace took second in the 3,200 (10:30.23), and Ingold was third (10:34.53. Lu added a second-place finish in the 800 (1:57.80).
"Thang was disappointed in how he did at conference," said Mosher, referring to Lu's third-place finish in the Badger Conference meet on May 17. "He ran a real smart tactical race. He did what he had to do."
Brodhead-Juda junior Reuben Larson won a regional championship in the 300 hurdles (41.16). Monroe sophomore Trevor Aebly took second in the 100 high hurdles (15.95) and also qualified for the sectional in the 300 hurdles.
"Trevor just started running the 300 hurdles," Mosher said.
Monroe freshman Jordan Montgomery finished second in the 100 (11.50).
Monroe senior Alex Koller teamed with sophomore Jason Koller, senior Cam Shaw and Lu to take second in the 1,600 relay in 3:31.69.
Sugar River's 400 relay team of senior Nick Smith, senior Lukas Diaz, sophomore Dalton Fahey and sophomore Nick Schult finished second (45.67).
Sugar River senior Landon Zimmerman took second in the shot put (54-10 and second in the discus (166-1).
