WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Monroe sophomore Ciara Kaderly planned to treat the WIAA Division 2 state meet like any other cross country meet.

Kaderly did just that and on the biggest stage, she ran to an 18th-place finish with a time of 19 minutes, 35.2 seconds Saturday at the Ridges Golf Course. It marked Kaderly's first time running at state.

"She had her trademark start getting out hard, settling in, then racing hard," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "Two of Ciara's big goals were to break 20 and try and run her PR. She did both by running 19:35, one second faster than her previous PR."

Madison Edgewood senior Amy Davis won the first girls 5K state championship with a time of 17:46.23. Davis had finished as the state runner-up the last two years. Green Bay Notre Dame edged McFarland for the team state title 91-99.

Kaderly was as high as ninth place in the race at one point.

"She has really developed as not only a tough racer, but a smart one," Hirsbrunner said. "Her kick has been getting better."

Fellow Monroe sophomore Nick Baumann finished 50th place in the boys' race with a time of 17:00.14.

"We are exceptionally proud of our two runners," Hirsbrunner said. "They both were running workouts that geared them to peak two weeks ago for our conference championship. For them both to be able to hang on and then perform at this high of a level at the pinnacle of the school season is a great testament to their toughness."

Baumann got off to his trademark start too, Hirsbrunner said.

Hirsbrunner said Baumann hung back to see what was going on and then attacked when he saw the race develop.

"One of Nick's big goals was to break 17 minutes," Hirsbrunner said. "By running 17:00 flat on this course was a huge accomplishment. When you look back over Nick's season - he was told at the beginning of the year that he would have to miss the season due to an injury. Not only did he come back from this injury, but he returned with a vengeance and didn't stop until the finish line of the state meet."

Nekoosa-Port Edwards senior Ben Eidenschink won the boys' state championship (15:42.71). Wisconsin Lutheran had four of the top nine runners en route to winning the team state championship 33-123 over Shorewood.
