JUDA - The Juda boys basketball team picked up their first conference win of the year, knocking off Six Rivers East foe Albany, 61-44.
The Panthers also snapped a two-game conference losing streak with the win. Juda coach Mike Armitage said he thinks his team is trending in the right direction.
"We're taking steps on the defensive end," Armitage said. "We're a long way from where we want to be, but we're taking steps. Offensively, when we had to make shots, we made shots."
The bulk of Juda's offense came from three seniors. Cole Bauman and Matt Trotter each scored 16, while Cody Suiter chipped in 14 for the Panthers.
Armitage said it was good to get the first conference win out of the way, and he is hopeful his team can take off from here.
"Just like the first win of the season, it feels good to get that first (conference) one out of the way," he said. "We're off for a while before we take on Barneveld. I like that we have this time off to work on some things. They're a good team... hopefully we'll be up for the challenge."
Monticello 67, Black Hawk 59
MONTICELLO - Bryce Klitzke erupted for 31 points to lead the Monticello boys basketball team to a 67-59 win over Black Hawk in a key early-season matchup.
"Klitzke made some big plays down the stretch to insure we would win the game," said Monticello coach Mark Olson.
Both teams entered the game undefeated, both in the Six Rivers East and overall. However, Monticello coach Mark Olson said the game was just as important as any other.
"Every conference win is a big game," he said.
Olson said the key for his team was their offensive performance.
"We valued the basketball, got a good shot on most possessions. We shot a lot of high-percentage shots."
The Ponies also got a substantial scoring effort from Ben May, who contributed 18. Merik Meythaler led Black Hawk with 13 points. Cory Rupnow and Heath Butler also scored in double digits for the Warriors.
Monticello (7-0, 3-0) grabbed sole possession of first place in the Six Rivers East with the win. Black Hawk is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Barneveld 57, Argyle 44
BARNEVELD - The Argyle boys basketball team hung tough with Barneveld for three quarters, but came up short in the end, falling to the Eagles, 57-44.
Argyle only trailed Barneveld, one of the preseason favorites in the Six Rivers East, by five heading into the fourth quarter. The Eagles pulled away in the fourth, though, outscoring the Orioles, 14-6 in the quarter. Argyle coach Michael Cassidy said he was pleased with the effort he got out of his team.
"We played hard and competed real hard," he said. "It was close after three quarters. There was about a 3- to 4-minute stretch in the fourth where it got away from us. You can't make little mistakes against a good team. They didn't make many mistakes and we made a few. But the effort was great, we made 'em earn everything they got."
Junior Alec Treuthardt scored 12 points to lead the Orioles. Argyle also got 10 points from both Pablo Vives and Riley Ostby. Barneveld's Devon Schult led all scorers with 21.
Argyle (3-4, 1-1) hosts Pecatonica on Friday.
