JUDA - Juda High School is looking to hire an assistant coach for its cooperative football team, Brodhead-Juda.

The assistant coaching position became available when previous assistant coach Kurtis Mansfield stepped down.

Juda High School Athletic Director Curt Brown said once he has several candidates he will set up interviews. The first official day of football practice is Aug. 1. The assistant coach hired would work for Brodhead-Juda head coach Jim Matthys. The Brodhead-Juda football team finished the regular season 5-4 last year. The Cardinals lost a WIAA first-round playoff game to Lodi 49-28.

"We would like to get someone as soon as we can," Brown said.

Brown said he's not sure how many candidates he will interview.

"It depends on how many apply," he said.

Matthys is entering his second year in his second stint as head coach. He coached the Brodhead-Juda football team for eight years before resigning four years ago when he was named the principal at Brodhead High School. Matthys was hired Jan. 13, 2016 for his second go-around at the helm for the Cardinals. Matthys is 74-31 in his nine years of guiding the Cardinals, including a state runner-up finish in 2010.
