RANDOLPH - Juda junior Chelsea Burkhalter scored a game-high 18 points and the Panthers clamped down on defense to upset second-seeded Randolph 54-43 in a WIAA girls basketball Division 5 regional semifinal Friday night.
"Honestly, it was big to go there and play in front of that crowd there and win," Juda coach Curt Brown said. "We won it defensively. It was our best team effort. The girls believed going in that they could win. When it's the playoffs you only have to win once."
Juda (11-9) jumped out to a 32-18 lead at the half. The Panthers led by as many as 17 points in the second half.
Juda advances to play at Hustisford for a regional title game at 7 p.m. today.
Juda senior Jessica Crull and sophomore Hailey Kammerer each added seven points.
The Panthers made 26 of 49 free throws.
"They got in some foul trouble, and I thought we adjusted to how the game was being called," Brown said. "We just need some rest now. We have a long bus ride to Hustisford tomorrow. At this time of year you just want to keep playing."
Brodhead 71, Lakeside Lutheran 67
BRODHEAD - Senior Kylie Moe scored a game-high 25 points and made 17 of 18 free throws to propel Brodhead past Lakeside Lutheran in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal.
Brodhead (20-3), ranked No. 7 in the Division 3 Associated Press state poll, won the showdown against sixth-ranked Lakeside Lutheran by enjoying a big edge at the free-throw line. The Cardinals made 23 of 34 free throws compared to Lakeside Lutheran, which was 10 of 18.
"We probably missed the majority of our free throws in the first half," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "We were looking to attack. Our kids were resilient and didn't quit."
The Cardinals trailed by seven points with about 4 minutes left. Brodhead closed the game with a 13-4 run. Brodhead sophomore Erin Nyhus drilled a 3-pointer late in the game to tie it. Moe knocked down 6 of 6 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
With Moe in foul trouble in the first half, the Cardinals switched to a 2-3 zone. Lakeside Lutheran led 36-29 at the half but couldn't hang on down the stretch.
Brodhead senior Amber Pickel added 20 points and sophomore Erin Nyhus had 19 points.
Brodhead advances to play at second-ranked Marshall (24-0) in a regional championship game tonight.
"They (Marshall) are really good," Kammerer said. "You don't go 24-0 as a fluke. They are deep. They have seven or eight kids who can score at will. We are taking it one possession at a time. I know the girls are excited."
Lakeside Lutheran was led by Meghan Pingel, who scored a team-high 22 points and knocked down four 3-pointers.
New Glarus 69, Parkview 32
NEW GLARUS - Senior guard Vanessa Narveson scored a team-high 14 points to help New Glarus roll over Parkview in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal.
New Glarus (18-5) led by eight points at the half and then outscored the Vikings 39-10 in the second half.
The Knights had four players in double figures. Senior Tamara Elzen added 13 points. Junior Julia Barnaby and sophomore Willow Lee each chipped in 10 points.
New Glarus advances to the regional championship game and will play at Cuba City tonight.
"I'm sure we are the underdog," New Glarus coach Kim Burton said. "In order to be the best you have to beat the best. We will go there and do our best and see what happens."
The Knights received a first-round bye in the tournament.
"In the first half, we were a little rusty from not playing in 10 days," Burton said. "Coming out in the second half the girls did a great job of defending their screen, rebounding and getting out and running the floor. We got a lot of baskets in transition."
Black Hawk 59, Rio 37
SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk set the tone early by foiling any plans Rio had of scoring in transition.
Black Hawk (14-9) raced out to an 18-1 lead and held Rio without a field goal for 9 minutes en route to cruising to a win in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal.
Black Hawk advances to play No. 1 seed Fall River in a regional final tonight.
"I thought for the first half of the first half we played pretty staunch defense," Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said.
The Warriors limited Rio's Dakota Hutzler to eight points. Hutzler entered the game averaging 18 points per game.
"We just said we are not going to contest outlet passes or pressure," Flanagan said. "We did a good job of defending Hustler. Hannah Herbst did a good job of playing defense on her."
Black Hawk senior Aleigha Sigafus scored a game-high 21 points. Junior Sam Lovelace chipped in nine points.
Fall River 81, Albany 18
FALL RIVER - Senior Kelly Tramburg scored a game-high 16 points to help Fall River roll over Albany in a Division 5 regional semifinal.
Fall River (19-4) built a 36-point lead and didn't look back. The Pirates outscored Albany (6-18) 45-9 in the first half. Fall River senior guard Alyssa Klecker added 14 points.
