JUDA - For Juda-Albany softball coach Bill Davis, playing a perennial power program like Racine Lutheran has benefits this time of year, even in a loss.

Racine Lutheran defeated Juda-Albany 8-1 and the Panthers knocked off Stockton-Warren, Ill. 9-4 in the Juda tournament Saturday, May 11.

"It helps a lot," Davis said. "It's like a sectional final game. You have the kids get used to the atmosphere. They (Racine Lutheran) are a pretty solid team. It's probably the best hitting team I have seen."

In the first game against Stockton-Warren, Juda-Albany senior Carlie Peters tossed a six-inning complete game. She gave up two earned runs on three hits. She struck out two and walked six.

The Panthers (9-8, 5-5 Six Rivers East) scored five runs in the second. Juda-Albany senior Jessica Rackow singled and Peters walked. Freshman Daniel Diekhoff then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Senior McKayla Trotter followed with an RBI single and sophomore Molly Marass delivered an RBI single.

Juda-Albany junior Tabatha Davis pitched a complete game against Racine Lutheran. She gave up eight runs, but just four were earned. She struck out three and walked two.

"In a game against a team like that you have to try to locate your pitches," Davis said. "If you miss a little bit, they will take advantage of it."

Monticello finished the tournament 2-0. The Ponies defeated Pecatonica, Ill. 5-1 and Stockton-Warren 11-0 in five innings. Monticello (16-3, 7-1 Six Rivers East) received shut-down pitching performances from sophomore Courtney Leuzinger and Clare Bruns. Leuzinger and Bruns combined to throw a no-hitter against Pec. The Monticello pitching duo had only one ball hit out of the infield for an out in two games. Leuzinger pitched 3 2/3 innings against Pec and gave up one run on no hits. She struck out three and walked seven. Bruns tossed 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.

"I was extremely happy," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said of the pitching performances. "When I get Courtney as a No. 2 pitcher, I feel really good. We played really well defensively."

Monticello's Clare Geitzel went 7-for-7 in the two games. She went 3-for-3 against Pec and 4-for-4 with three runs scored against Stockton-Warren.

Monticello junior Marissa Berg had a key two-run single in the first against Pec.

Bruns pitched a complete five inning one-hitter against Stockton-Warren. She struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Jordan Garrison went 2-for-3 against Stockton-Warren.

Monticello and Barneveld are tied atop the Six Rivers East Conference at 7-1. Monticello will play a doubleheader at Belleville today and then will host Black Hawk on Tuesday, May 14. Barneveld (9-6, 7-1) will host Argyle on Tuesday. The Ponies will root for the Orioles to beat the Eagles Tuesday.

"It sets up better for us than Barneveld," Garrison said.

The Orioles split two games in the Juda-Albany tournament.

Argyle edged Pecatonica, Ill. 3-1 and then lost to Racine Lutheran 13-3.

Argyle senior Kayla Ostby went 2-for-4 against Stockton-Warren and sophomore Jenna Langmeier scored two runs.

Argyle junior Jessica Treuthardt pitched a complete game and gave up one run on two hits. She struck out eight and walked one. The Orioles committed three errors in the first game and two in the second.

"I was happy with the first game," Argyle coach Dan Treuthardt said. "We are trying to get rid of the errors and mistakes we have been making. Our defense stood up."

Dan Treuthardt said Ostby pitched the second game against Racine Lutheran because Jessica Treuthardt's arm was sore.

"She gave up eight runs in the first inning and then settled down and did a lot better," Dan Treuthardt said of Ostby. "Racine Lutheran has a really good program. They are a solid team."

Argyle's Alysha Monahan went 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Orioles.
