MINERAL POINT - Senior Tannar Johnson looked in midseason form for Pecatonica's opening day of the 2011 season. Johnson struck out eight and allowed just two hits and three walks in a complete game shutout over Mineral Point. The Vikings won, 5-0.

"Tannar didn't allow a runner past second base," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "Our defense was pretty good behind him, too. We had a few nice catches in the outfield and both of our shortstop and second baseman had diving stops."

Pecatonica had zero errors and 10 hits - two numbers any coach would like to see.

"It's been said that the formula for success in baseball is good pitching, good defense and timely hitting. We did that," Strommen said.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first on an RBI single by Ross Gilbertson. Pecatonica also scored two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings against the Pointers, a team with high expectations in the SWAL.

"For a first game against a quality team like Mineral Point, we did excellent," Strommen said.

Taylor Berg was 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and three runs. Gilbertson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, J.J. Hogan went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Tanner Kleppe was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
