SHULLSBURG - Pecatonica junior Tannar Johnson played a pivotal role in delivering the Vikings a comeback eight-inning win over Shullsburg-Benton, 5-4, Monday.
Pecatonica sophomore J.J. Hagen was hit by a pitch in the top of the eighth inning. Shullsburg-Benton intentionally walked senior Devin Jeglum. That set the stage for Johnson who came through with a game-winning two-out RBI single.
Johnson finished 2-for-5 at the plate and closed out the win by retiring three straight batters in the bottom of the eighth. Johnson pitched two shutout innings and gave up just one hit.
"He's a pretty confident kid," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "He's one player who will have to come through for us in those situations. He came through when he needed to tonight."
Junior Kevin Swenson started and gave up four runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked four. Jeglum, in relief, pitched three shutout innings and surrendered just two hits. He struck out five and walked one.
The Vikings trailed 4-2 in the fifth, but junior Ross Gilbertson delivered an RBI single and the Vikings tied the game after scoring on an unearned run after a Shullsburg-Benton error.
Pecatonica (1-1) will host New Glarus Thursday.
In other action, Monticello was shutout by Orfordville Parkview 7-0.
