ORANGEVILLE - Cade Janecke, a fifth-grader at Orangeville Elementary and member of the Monroe Youth Hockey Association, was recently named to the 2014 Kohlman Cup Hockey Tournament, representing Region 4 for the state of Wisconsin.
Janecke has been playing hockey for the Avalanche since 2005. The last time Monroe has been represented in the Kohlman Cup was in 2008, when Alex Landon (now a senior at Monroe High School) was named to the team.
The Kohlman Cup is limited exclusively to Tier II Pee Wee Players. It allows the top Pee Wee age level players in Wisconsin to test themselves against the best Tier II players in WAHA (Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association) region. Any player from local Pee Wee A organizations is encouraged to try out. More than 500 players have tried out in each of the 10 years of the event.
Janecke is one of nine forwards who will represent Region 4, April 5-6, in Onalaska. Besides the tournament games, he will also have the opportunity to compete in an individual and team skills competition. An All-Tournament team will be selected in each age group of the Kohlman Cup. Those players will be members of Team Wisconsin and will play in the Northern Exposure AAA tournament this summer.
Two former Kohlman Cup participants are now playing Division 1 hockey - Jake McCabe (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Aaron Harstad (Colorado College).
Janecke is the son of Roon and Kari Janecke of Orangeville and grandson of Tom and Rhonda Wonders of Darlington and Dr. Tom and Sue Janecke of Warren.
