ITHACA - With two outs in the seventh inning, the Argyle softball team saw the fate of their season fly deep to right only to be caught in the midst of what appeared to be a game-changing swing by senior Jessica Treuthardt.
As the play unfolded, Ithaca's Kerrigan Hoffine had just enough time to get underneath the flyball in order to snag the Oriole's final out along with their chances of garnering their program's first-ever state tournament berth. With the 2-1 victory, Ithaca (20-1) advances to its school's first ever state tournament.
After Ithaca's Lacy Olson and Jessica Laue got on base after consecutive singles in the first inning, the host Bulldogs rallied them in with a deep double that was ripped to center field.
Down 2-0, Argyle responded early in the fourth. After starting the inning with a double, Orioles junior Hannah Saalsaa turned on the wheels after an errant throw to third to score her team's first run.
Hoping to continue off of the momentum, Argyle struggled to find an answer to Ithaca pitcher Jordan Cockcroft. Not until the seventh inning did the Orioles come close, where Treuthardt's swing-of-the-bat flyball fell just short of an Argyle comeback. Cockcroft struck out 10.
Kari Fischer finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Argyle (20-7). Treuthardt wrapped up her high school career with six solid innings on the mound, allowing only three hits, two runs, zero walks, while striking out five batters.
It marked Argyle's first sectional final appearance since 1998 when coach Heidi Ganshert was a junior on the softball team.
