PLATTEVILLE - Monroe senior Drake Ingold will get a chance for the second straight year to run at state, but the Cheesemakers boys cross country team fell short in their bid to return to the state meet.
Monroe, ranked sixth in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, finished third at the WIAA Division 2 Platteville sectional Saturday and missed returning to state as a team by 26 points. Dodgeville-Mineral Point won the sectional team championship (45 points). McFarland (74) outdueled the Cheesemakers for second. Monroe took third (100). The top two teams advance to state.
However, Ingold finished second overall with a time of 16 minutes, 42.4 seconds and was one of the five individual state qualifiers. The top five individuals not on one of the top two finishing teams also qualify for state. Ingold finished behind McFarland junior Andrew Pahnke (16:08.1) as the sectional champion.
"Drake has worked extremely hard over the past year for a chance to compete at the state meet," Monroe co-coach Jim Ingold said. "He's dedicated himself to a smart summer training program, running a lot of summer miles. I know he is excited about finishing his last race with a strong performance."
Brodhead-Juda senior Michael Hatter took fifth (16:55.5) and also earned a state berth.
"We knew he (Hatter) would be in the hunt," Brodhead-Juda coach Curt Gratz said. "Some of the people he was running with were in contention. For him to come out and race like he did, it's great. It was a PR for him by 17 seconds. He came into the season with two goals - breaking 178 minutes and qualifying for state and he accomplished both of those goals."
Monroe junior Kyle Legler took 12th (17:20.3) and just missed qualifying for state by one spot and 2.3 seconds.
Monroe sophomore Dylan Fahrney placed 22nd (17:40.7) and senior Dylan Scace took 24th (17:50.7). Fellow senior Jason Koller finished 40th (18:23.8). Freshman Alex Henry didn't run due to illness.
"This team would've made some noise at state, it was just unfortunate we were short-handed and running in the toughest sectional site in the state," Jim Ingold said.
Brodhead-Juda finished ninth (232) out of 14 teams. Sophomore Jacob Staffon took 43rd (18:25.7) and senior Holden Whitledge placed 55th (18:46.2). Freshman Trenton Condon finished 62nd (19:11.7) and sophomore Carter Urness placed 67th (19:20.9).
Brodhead-Juda had two girls qualify for state. Freshman Madelynn McIntrye won the Division 2 girls 5,000-meter race with a time of 20:18.3. Senior teammate Madee Harding finished third (20:45.3) to also qualify for state.
McIntrye is the first Brodhead-Juda runner to win an individual sectional title. McIntrye's father, Mike McIntrye was a state champion for Albany in 1988 and led the Comets to three straight state titles 1987-89.
"She has some genetics and that helps," Gratz said of McIntyre. "She's very driven. She came into the season making qualifying (for state) her goal. It's pretty bold as a freshman."
Prairie du Chien captured the sectional tile with 50 points. McFarland (79) took the other state-qualifying spot coming in second. Brodhead-Juda finished fifth (143) and Monroe took 10th (252) out of 14 teams.
Having two girls qualify for state is special for Gratz and the Cardinals. It's the second time Harding has qualified for state.
"It's exciting," Gratz said of the two state qualifiers. "We wanted to maybe be in the team hunt. It's great for Maddie to make it back. She's always been an athlete who rises to the occasion. She and Madelynn both rose to the occasion Saturday."
Brodhead-Juda senior Cora Purdue finished 19th (21:45.9) and Monroe freshman Jaci Hayes took 21st (21:52.8).
"Jaci has been a consistent runner for the team all season," Ingold said. "This is her first season running cross country. I'm excited to see what she can accomplish in the next few years."
Brodhead-Juda junior Zoe Tresemer placed 54th (23:25.6) and senior Morgan Tresemer was 66th (24:13.1).
Monroe senior Rachel Meier finished 31st (22:26.8) in her final prep race. Junior teammate Elise Smith took 57th (23:40.5) and junior Maddie Bartlet was 61st (23:51.6). Senior Ally Einbeck took 82nd (25:18.1) to round out the top five for the Cheesemakers.
Monroe freshman Anika Einbeck wasn't able to finish due to a hip injury she suffered last week at conference.
"We iced and rested her injury all week hoping she could get through the race. She would have had a good chance to qualify for state if she was running healthy."
Drake Ingold now gears up for the WIAA Division 2 state meet Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.
"I'm happy to see the girls team bounce back from the conference meet with some very good performances," Ingold said. "After the state meet, both the boys and girls teams will start to set their goals for next season."
