PLATTEVILLE - In what many may see as a preview of a WIAA Division 2 sectional race in three weeks, Monroe senior Drake Ingold finished as the champion of the Dick McKichan Platteville Invitational Saturday.
Ingold won the race out of 153 runners with a lifetime-best time of 15 minutes, 59.6 seconds. It marks the first time Ingold has broken 16 minutes and he surged over the final 800 meters to the win.
"It was a big accomplishment for him," Monroe co-coach Scott Mosher said. "It wasn't as hot as the Midwest Invitational. The course was flatter. It was cooler and there are some hills. There are some inclines, but it is a gradual decline where you can make up some time."
Dodgeville-Mineral Point finished first overall and in the large school division outdueling Monroe 45-58. In three weeks, Platteville will host the sectional and the top two teams qualify for state. McFarland took third Saturday (61). Darlington, which won the small school division (31 points) took fourth out of all 22 teams. Brodhead-Juda took 10th in the large school division (264).
"It will be the same course for the sectional," Mosher said. "It looks like it will be a three-team race at the sectional."
Monroe senior Dylan Scace finished fourth in the large school division (16:30.7) and junior Kyle Legler was seventh (16:40).
"We had two runners ahead of their No. 1 guy," Mosher said of the Pointers. "We showed up front we had them beat."
Sophomore Dylan Fahrney took 18th for the Cheesemakers with a PR of 17:14 and freshman Alex Henry placed 28th (17:39.4).
"Dylan ran a really good time and stepped up," Mosher said. "We want to be getting faster at the right time. It seems to be working. We just need another runner or two to step up and we will be fine for the sectional."
Brodhead-Juda sophomore Jacob Staffon finished 31st (17:51.1) and senior Holden Whitledge took 37th (17:57.2). Sophomore teammate Carter Urness took 61st (18:42.6) followed by freshman Trenton Condon in 62nd (18:43.7). Senior Alex Aguilar rounded out the top five for the Cardinals taking 73rd (19:29.5).

"There are a lot of teams that have similar runners at the top for the sectional," Mosher said. "I think on a really good day we could have 25 or 30 points cut and we could have been right in the mix of things. If all of the girls run their best on the same day you never know what will happen."
Brodhead-Juda freshman Madelyn McIntyre took second (19:47.6) and Monroe freshman Anika Einbeck finished fifth (20:17.6). The other top-10 performance from the area came from senior Madee Harding who finished seventh (20:25.4).
