Hy-Vee triathlon set for Saturday

VERONA - The Hy-Vee IronKids triathlon is set for Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Fireman's Park, 600 Bruce St.

More than 300 kids, ages 6 to 15, are expected to participate in the triathlon Saturday.

The USAT-sanctioned IronKids youth triathlons follow the same swim-bike-run format as an adult triathlon, with distances adjusted for the ages of the competitors. The top five boys and the top give girls at each age level will qualify to compete at the Hy-Vee IronKids U.S. Championship scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 in Des Moines, Iowa.

A portion of the proceeds from each entry fee will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The schedule of events for Friday is:

8 a.m. to noon- building the course

3 to 7:30 p.m. - registration/packet pick-up/ IronKids Expo open

4:45 to 5:15 p.m. - triathlon transition clinic - free to all participants

The schedule of events for Saturday is:

6 to 7:45 a.m. - packet pick up (no race-day registration)

6 a.m. to noon - IronKids Expo

6:30 to 7:45 a.m. - transition opens - all athletes

8 a.m. - senior division start (ages 12 to 15)

9:30 a.m. - intermediate division (ages 9 to 11)

11:15 a.m. - junior division start (ages 6 to 8)

11:30 a.m. - awards ceremony - all divisions
