NEW GLARUS - Senior quarterback Gabe Noyce and junior running back Jim Chenoweth are well aware that the New Glarus-Monticello football team isn't known for its passing game.
That reputation may change after Noyce completed 7 of 12 passes for 149 yards and Chenoweth had three receptions for 95 yards and one touchdown to lead the Glarner Knights to a 31-7 win over Waterloo on homecoming. Noyce also rushed for 157 yards and scored two touchdowns.
"With all the homecoming activities, it's not hard to overlook the game," Chenoweth said. "I think we came in prepared, and we showed it tonight."
After New Glarus-Monticello bottled up a Pirates fake punt in the second quarter for a turnover on downs, the Knights went to work.
Noyce scored on a 37-yard TD run to spark the team to a 9-0 lead with 6 minutes, 10 seconds to go in the second quarter.
"The line did a great job of blocking," Noyce said. "I have a lot of faith in my receivers. I know if I get time, my receivers will come down with it."
New Glarus-Monticello coach Desie Breadon was proud of the offensive breakout.
"We challenged the offense to be one big explosion instead of individual firecrackers," Breadon said. "They all came off the ball and sustained their blocks. We knew we had the potential. Finally, it showed. It's nice to see the shades of what we can be."
Early on, a dark area hung over the field as the lights on the Waterloo sideline went out. There was about a 10-minute delay, but the lights were restored at the end of the first quarter.
Noyce tossed a swing pass to Chenoweth who made a cut and raced 57-yards for a touchdown with 3:37 left in the second quarter to give the Knights a 17-0 lead at halftime.
"We have been working on it a lot in practice," Chenoweth said of the passing game. "I was waiting to run (the swing pass). The corners were crashing in on the slant. I was just waiting for the right moment. I knew, and Gabe knew, it was going to be open."
It didn't take the Knights long to add to their lead in the second half as Noyce bolted for a 78-yard TD run on a triple option on the first play of the third quarter. The Pirates committed two turnovers and had a fake punt and a turnover on downs. The Knights forced a Pirates' fumble on their first possession of the second half and recovered at Waterloo's 46-yard line. New Glarus-Monticello senior Spencer Jones then scored on a 1-yard TD plunge to give the Knights a 31-0 lead. The big play of the drive was Noyce's 34-yard pass to Chenoweth. Jones rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries and had one touchdown.
"It's important for us to win the turnover game," Chenoweth said. "We haven't done that the last couple of games. Our defense is usually really good and we did it again. Everyone did their jobs."
