MADISON - Craig Hodgson of New Glarus is still in the running to contend for a title at the 110th annual Wisconsin State Amateur Golf Championships at the Maple Bluff Country Club.

Hodgson is 4-over-par after two rounds of the tournament and is five shots behind leader Ricky Hearden of Green Bay.

Hodgson shot a 5-over-par 76 in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday. He birdied the 167-yard No. 13 and the 497-yard No. 14. However, he struggled on No. 16 and finished with a double bogey.

Hearden shot an even par (71) to take the lead. Hearden, who plays at the Horseshoe Bay Golf Club in Egg Harbor, heads into the third round at 1-under-par.

Hearden credited his putter for his steady play in the second round.

"My putter really kept me in it," he said. "I putted great."

When he finished his round, he trailed only Mike Sorenson by three strokes. He knew he stood a chance of playing in the final pairing and welcomed the opportunity.

"It definitely would be an advantage to be in the final group," he said.

Sorenson, who shot a 4-under-par in the first round, fell back in the second round. One birdie and five bogeys dropped him four shots into a tie for second place.

Two other local golfers including Monroe's Brent Quade and Blanchardville's Chuck Chandler missed the cut for the third round. Quade rebounded after shooting an 11-over-81 in the first round. He finished with a two-over-par 73 in the second round, but he missed the cut. Quade did post birdies on the 364-yard No. 10, No. 13 and the 375-yard No. 17.

Chandler finished a combined 25-over-par (167) for the first two rounds and he missed the cut. He finished with three double bogeys in the second round and had a combined 19 bogeys in the first two rounds.

Hodgson will tee off at 11:36 a.m. in the third round today.
