WHITEWATER - Monroe has a new pole vault champion. Senior Jeffrey Hill broke the school record with a mark of 14 feet, 4 inches at Saturday's Wisconsin TFA Indoor Championships at UW-Whitewater.
"Jeff is probably the highlight of the day," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "He has worked very hard to get to where he is now. We're all glad that the school record is now out of the way, because Jeff deserves it."
Michael Barrett finished second in the high jump with a mark of 6-4.
"Michael again hits a big jump. Going 6-4 indoors without spikes on is a great performance," Miller said.
Dylan Stark was fourth in the 1,600-meter run and Nick Walker was seventh in the shot put (51-4).
"Nick has been in the 51s in four of our five meets this year. His consistency has been outstanding," Miller said. "Dylan's 1,600 was the best race that he's probably ever run. He's elevated himself to a new level and beat some really good runners in that race."
On the girls' side, Jess Leu was seventh in the shot put (36-3 1/2) and Jaclyn Ditter was eighth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.40).
Ditter, Lauren Werth, Maria Eberle and Brenna Bazley teamed up to take 10th in the 800 relay (1 minute, 53.13 seconds). Freshman Werth was 10th in the 55-meter dash (7.81) and freshman Taylor Barrett was 10th in the high jump (4-10).
"To be top 10 at this meet is a great accomplishment," Miller said. "Lauren and Taylor, both freshman, were able to finish 10th in an individual event. With the departure of a fair amount of pretty good seniors last year, it is nice to see new kids to the program like Lauren and Taylor step up and have a great day."
Monroe's boys team took third place, scoring 25 points which trailed only Appleton North (41.5) and champion Green Bay Preble (45). On the girls side, the Cheesemakers were tied for 34th with 3 points, just a half of a point back from Darlington.
Darlington's Cassidy Chambers was fifth in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet even and Chelsea Fortin was ninth in the pole vault (9-0).
Albany's Jessica Mauerman was 21st in the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 1:08.41.
