Highland outduels Warriors

HIGHLAND - Bailee Rose pitched a four-hitter to lead the Highland softball team to a 9-1 win over Black Hawk on Saturday.

Rose allowed just four hits and gave up just one unearned run. She struck out 10 and walked two. With the win, Highland improves to 5-2, 3-0 Six Rivers West.

"We hit the ball fairly well, but it just seemed to be right at them," Black Hawk coach Jim Baumgartner said. "Highland had the better luck and seemed to get hits in the gap. Just the way it goes some days."

Black Hawk sophomore Hannah Herbst stole home in the third inning to put the Warriors on the board. The Warriors left six runners in scoring position. With the loss, Black Hawk drops to 2-1.

Black Hawk senior Rachel Ritschard pitched six innings and gave up four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out 11 and walked five.

Highland's Hailie Kosharek went 2-for-3 with a double and Karen McMannes was 2-for-5.

CLINTON - Brodhead sophomore ace pitcher Azzy Steiner pitched two complete games and combined to strike out 26 to propel the Cardinals to a doubleheader sweep over Clinton on Saturday.

In the first game, Steiner struck out 12 and was impressive in keeping the Cougars at bay. Brodhead had just two hits - one from junior Michelle Loeffelholz and one from sophomore McKayla Hayes, but the Cardinals took advantage of two errors by the Cougars.

The Cardinals broke the game open with a five-run seventh. Brodhead senior Alissa Hantke had two RBI to lead the Cardinals.

In the second game of the twinbill, Steiner struck out 14 and gave up just three runs. She limited the Cougars to five hits and the Cardinals committed three errors.

Brodhead junior Ali Rosheisen had three hits and two RBI to power the Cardinals.

Loeffelholz also had three hits and two RBI to spark the Cardinals.
