High flying Ponies

MONTICELLO - Senior Lukas Kolasch poured in 22 points and shot 9 for 10 at the free throw line to lead the Monticello Ponies past the Highland Cardinals, 55-49 in a non-conference game Monday.

The Ponies got off to a fast start with a 7-0 first quarter lead, but the Cardinals grabbed their only lead of the game at 15-14 early in the second quarter. Monticello held a 27-24 advantage at halftime, and ended the third quarter with a 39-38 lead. In the fourth quarter, Monticello took their biggest lead at 49-38 thanks to a 10-0 run to begin the quarter.

Highland got to within 54-49 with 36 seconds remaining, but clutch free throw shooting by Kolasch, who went 8-9 in the final quarter, sealed the win. Sophomore Lucas Marty added nine points for the Ponies.

Monticello (1-3) will host Argyle in a Six Rivers East conference game Thursday.

Shullsburg 56, Argyle 25

ARGYLE - The Shullsburg Miners held the Argyle Orioles to single digit scoring in every quarter on their way to a 56-25 win in a non-conference game.

Sophomore Christopher Severson led the Orioles with 13 points. Shullsburg's Jacob Scott led all scorers with 15 points.

"We're struggling to find ways to score and stop teams. We have a lot of work to do," said Argyle head coach Brandon Bakken.

The Miners held a 31-12 halftime lead and took command by outscoring the Orioles 19-8 in the third quarter.

"Honestly, we are going back to the drawing board. We are going to start back from square one," said Bakken.

Shullsburg (2-3) will travel to Cassville for their next game Dec. 20. Argyle (1-4, 0-1 Six Rivers East) will travel to Monticello Thursday.

Barneveld 67, Darlington 53

DARLINGTON - The Barneveld Eagles, ranked No. 9 in the Division 5 Associated Press state poll, stayed undefeated with a 67-53 win over the Darlington Redbirds in a boys non-conference game.

The Eagles got 23 points from Sawyer Lee and 18 points from Sam Nechkash while improving to 4-0. Senior Brandon Hardyman paced Darlington with 21 points. Senior Kent Miehe added 14 points for the Redbirds.

Barneveld led 34-29 at halftime and didn't allow the Redbirds to get any closer in the second half.

"We didn't play together very well," said Darlington head Coach Mike Hopkins. "We didn't set very good screens and we were out of sync on offense. They got some easy looks inside."

Darlington (4-2) will return to SWAL conference action Thursday when they travel to Mineral Point.
